Free American Sign Language Workshop
Armour Street Theatre, Davidson
February 18, 10:30am-12:00pm
Hundreds of thousands of people in the United States use American Sign Language (ASL) as their primary language. Many are deaf, while others are family members, friends and co-workers who have learned to sign in order to communicate with the deaf person. Many high schools and colleges now offer ASL as a foreign language and classes fill up quickly. Have you ever wanted to know the basics of sign language? Davidson Community Players, in association with a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council, will offer a FREE American Sign Language workshop on Saturday, February 18 from 10:30am to 12:00pm at the Armour Street Theater in Davidson, NC. This basic introduction to ASL will cover: simple phrases, finger spelling, numbers and colors as well as valuable information about the Deaf culture. The workshop will be led by Lyndi Patton-Gura, a professional sign language interpreter, teacher and actress. Lyndi is one of the featured “shadow interpreters” for the Players production of Children of a Lesser God, which opens Feb 23 and runs thru March 11. Shadow interpreting puts the signing right beside the actor and will be used at all twelve performances, making each show accessible to all people who sign. Space is limited so make your reservation by calling the Box Office at 704-892-7953.
