A cool thing happened recently. I posted a question on Facebook about Disney Princesses (“love them or hate them or who cares?”) in an attempt to gather some quick research for a radio show I was doing on how a girl’s sense of self is impacted by the DPs. I got terrific feedback, ranging the full spectrum of perspectives. That was cool… but not the cool thing I’m excited about.
What happened next was my phone rang.
It was a dear friend who had been watching the princess comments build over a couple of days and it got her thinking. She needed some quick research, too, for an issue happening right at her very house. Her 6th grade daughter had a new email account and she wondered, “Should I read her emails or is that an invasion of privacy? What do other moms do???” So she asked if I would post her question anonymously on Facebook. I, too, had often longed for someone who could bestow upon me the correct answers for all that befuddles me. A fairy godmother of sorts?
When do I let her start to shave?
Is he too old to have a girl in his room even if they are just friends?
Is she really the only one without a cell phone?
Can he and a buddy be dropped off at the movies yet? Do I have to sit in the back?
A fairy godmother I can’t promise, but good advice from a community of smart parents feels pretty magical to me.
Here is how it will work:
The action will happen on the Michelle in the Middle Facebook page. If you haven’t already done it, go here and click “like” next to the page title Michelle in the Middle. That gets you access to see all the advice and to comment yourself if you have an opinion. Every Wednesday on Facebook I’ll post a question from a parent. If you have been wondering something and would like other parents to weigh in, just email me your question to michelle@michelleinthemiddle.com and I’ll post it without using your name. Feel better already?
For those of you who don’t care to jump on the Facebook bandwagon I’ll post a summary of the questions and feedback (without posting anyone’s name) on my website: MichelleintheMiddle.com.
Fairy dust falls, the lights dim, Michelle exits stage left.
