Many Smarty families are hitting the road this summer, be it the beach, the in-laws’ or the mountains. Don’t forget to pack some exercise clothes and running shoes. Exercising in a new place can be fun and get you out of your old routine. Returning home feeling fit, not fat is an added bonus!
Running on the beach is beautiful, peaceful, and easy on the joints, but it is not the only thing you can do on your coastal getaway. Make your own mini triathlon. Go for a short run, jump on a bike to explore and then try some laps in the pool. And this can be done with kids in tow. Little ones can spot birds and sandcastles while they zoom along in the stroller and older kids can set your running pace on their bike.
Do a bit of research before you reach your destination. We are heading to Long Island for a wedding and I found a 4-mile race to take part in that also has a 1-mile fun run for the children! On my last trip to visit my mom in Atlanta, I searched out the hottest fitness classes in town. West Coast Workout was amazing, kick boxing at Brookhaven Fitness knocked me out, and I am excited to try Blast 900 on my visit this summer. There is such a variety of classes out there and many offer a free first visit.
Map My Run and Run.com can keep your running for miles and miles with all the popular running routes you can find. Search online for a convenient yoga studio or use your laptop to download a workout. The concierge at your hotel can also recommend some cool gyms or nice running areas in town. Some hotels even have deals with nearby fitness centers.
Want to keep it simple, create your own boot camp style workout at a picnic bench or playground. Get creative while you increase your heart rate and fatigue those muscles.
Give yourself a workout treat on your summer vacation and you won’t regret it!
