Smarty Giveaway: One Week of Junior Camp at Camp Highlander – $1,150 value!

Smarties, we have another fabulous giveaway as a part of our 2013 Smarty Camp Guide! Our Smarty friends at Camp Highlander are giving away one week of camp – Junior II session, June 16-21 (Sunday – Friday) for campers K-4th grade. This is a value of $1,150 – pick me, pick me!

Camp Highlander, located in Mills River, NC, near Asheville, provides a magical summer experience for girls and boys, ages 5-16. Year after year, campers return to build lasting memories at the 240 acre campus nestled in the heart of the North Carolina mountains.

Junior Camp is specifically geared toward younger campers (K to 4th grades), with lower camper to counselor ratios and special activities that peak the young campers’ interest. Campers get a taste of independence away from mom and dad, without the financial outlay of a multi-week experience. Summer camp allows children to grow through hands-on experience, unlike school or any other learning environment. Activities for this age group include canoeing, riflery, archery, horseback riding, climbing, theater, crafts, zip wire and swimming.

A distinguishing characteristic of Camp Highlander is its Cabin Unit philosophy. At first, I was a bit confused – don’t most camps have cabins? But it turns out that only 3% of camps across the nation create a cohesive Cabin Unit of same-age campers that stay together 24/7. At other camps, kids scatter after breakfast to try new activities. By contrast, the Cabin Unit, under the tutelage of dedicated, trained mentors, engage in all that Camp Highlander has to offer – together. This approach creates consistency, connection and a sense of belonging. As a parent, you know how important all that is! Camp Highlander campers do get to choose their own activities twice a week. However, the Cabin Unit helps campers learn to appreciate differences and to encourage one another, thereby fostering friendships that can last a lifetime.

For over 50 years, Camp Highlander has changed the lives of campers through outstanding role-model staff and high-caliber programs. Older campers enjoy adventures like Nantahala whitewater rafting, canoeing on the Green River, camping at Dupont Forest and even a horseback overnight at the Biltmore Estate. Long-term owners, Karl and Shelley Alexander, are dedicated to giving campers life skills that build character and leadership. In fact, the Alexanders take this commitment so seriously, they are bringing the social leadership programs, Athena’s Path and Hero’s Pursuit, to their Intermediate Camp this summer.

You are probably familiar with these leadership programs as they were designed by our very own CSP middle school expert, Michelle Icard. Michelle in the Middle leadership curriculum will teach Intermediate Campers skills to help them make their own decisions, lead their own lives and navigate the tricky social scene of middle school, using their unique leadership styles and personalities. Here at CSP, we can’t believe what a great opportunity middle schoolers have to combine a high quality sleep away camp with these valuable life lessons!
