Be part of a big, exciting, community-wide book club, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s annual Community Read. We’ve selected books for every age group, and there are plenty of fun ways to participate.
1. Join the biggest book club in town.
We’re more than a great community. We’re a book club. And with a book selection for every age group, everyone is invited to join in on the fun. This year, all of the selected titles take place in a 24-hour time period. So spend a day with us for a month, and check out these great titles:
Adults: Today Will Be Different by Maria Semple
Teens: The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon
Preteens: 11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass
Children: The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt
Children: The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
2. Catch a free movie or two.
There are also lots of movies that take place in a 24-hour time span, and the Library is showing several of them at Main Library – for FREE! As part of the Library’s regular film series, check out “12 Movies in Reel Time.”
3. Read the book and see the play.
One of the Community Read children’s titles is The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. Our friends at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte are also doing a production of The Snowy Day and Other Stories this fall! What a great opportunity to read the story with your children and then let them see the story in action at the theatre. This can help them appreciate reading and storytelling, see how what they imagined comes to life on stage.
4. Meet the authors.
The Library’s book club is so awesome, even the authors are coming! You have the opportunity to meet Maria Semple, author of Today Will Be Different, on October 2, and Nicola Yoon, author of The Sun Is Also a Star, on October 6. Following their presentations, the authors will answer audience questions and there may even be an opportunity to get your book signed! Both events take place at ImaginOn. Tickets are free, but limited. Be sure to reserve your tickets by visiting the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte website or by calling the Box Office at 704-973-2828.
5. Spend time with your neighbors at a local program.
Community Read is so much more than reading the books – we hope you will visit your local branch to participate in a program too. With Community Read themed storytimes, art projects, book discussions and even Escape Rooms, there is sure to be something your whole family would enjoy!
