It’s #sharkweek2015 at Discovery Place and all around the world! I don’t know about you, but I’m FASCINATED by sharks, always have been, despite the negative press they often get. My favorite time of summer is #sharkweek and I learn something new every Shark Week Season. I will be following the recent shark attacks off the NC coast very closely in the coming months. I know it’s not because they are hunting humans – it’s a combination of many things and most importantly, just being at the wrong place at the wrong time. It won’t keep my family from entering our oceans, that’s for sure. But it’s all the more reason to learn more about these intriguing animals during #sharkweek2015, and what better place to teach us than our Smarty friends at Discovery Place?
Here is the line-up at Discovery Place this week:
Dig for shark teeth, watch a shark dissection and even observe a live shark feeding. Visit with Discovery Place’s rare walking sharks (Hemiscyllium ocellatum), named for the way they use their pectoral and pelvic fins to “walk” along the bottom of the ocean floor.
Then get up close to the largest shark in the world from the safety of your seat with the new IMAX® film Great White Shark, now playing in the IMAX Dome Theatre. Read all about how much Team CSP enjoyed Great White Shark here.
Daily Activity Schedule:
11:00 a.m. – Feeling crafty? Join the DP Team in the Explore More Collections lab to make a shark hat and learn about the animal we all love to fear.
2:00 p.m. – Calling all paleontologists! Join the DP Team for a fossil dig in Explore More Collections as we search for objects such as shark teeth, crinoid stems and nautiloid shells. Choose one specimen to take home!
