After doing this Mama gig a few years now, I’ve realized how much I appreciate a holiday where we don’t actually have to do anything. No presents to buy (unless you’re like me and your mom’s birthday is New Year’s Day, but that’s nothing compared to the Christmas-present hangover I’m still nursing). No bird to stuff. No eggs to hide. No candy to tape to red hearts. No cake to bake with strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries as our stars and stripes. No costumes to buy. No class parties.
The only thing we might have to do is slow-cook some black-eyed peas and put some chips and salsa in a dish for the football games. Child’s play.
Yep, I’ve decided for New Year’s Day, all we really have to do is sit. Remember what that’s like? Sitting? Yea, I don’t either, and I intend to reunite with this lovely verb that I scarcely know.
I’m not sure if my kids are with me on this, but I’m gonna make sure that part of our day is just sitting – even if it’s just for 30 minutes (please – I have three boys – there’s no way we’re sitting for more than 30 minutes). I’m not sure what we’re going to do while sitting – we’re so unfamiliar with the actual act of sitting that it may be a tad awkward at first – but we’ll adapt.
New Year’s Day is our one chance to breathe. We’re going to exhale 2012, deeply inhale 2013, and hope for our best year yet.
January 2 will come soon enough and they’ll be alarm clocks, deadlines, homework, sports practices, and social commitments. Real Life is great because that’s what it is – life – but today is our one reprieve from the busyness.
Everyone here at Charlotte Smarty Pants is so excited about our year ahead – we’ll have more awesome giveaways, partnerships and tons of news to share about what’s going on in our lovely city. We’ve had so much fun with you in 2012, and we know 2013 will be even better. So, use to today to sit back and relax – and start getting excited about what’s in store in our little pink and green corner of the world!
(Oh, and while you’re here, don’t forget to vote for the “2012 Jennifer Lisman Bunich Smarty Mom of the Year” – these are some amazing women!! Let’s show them some love!)
Here’s to 2013, Smarties!
