Have you ever met someone who just seemed happy all time? It can be infectious. Amy is that way. She is always up for a good time, good food and a good laugh. We met through our kids and became fast friends. She is a Charlotte native who comes from a wonderful family that has taught her to give back big to her community. Her husband Alfred is awesome and I imagine he just shakes his head at her a lot and says “Oh Amy”. She is a fantastic and patient mom and a fiercely loyal friend. Lets hear more about the great work she is doing for our community through the Levine Children’s Hospital. Here is our Smarty Mom this week Amy Levine Dawson.
Married to: Alfred Dawson
Mom to: Mindy (6) and Bentley (8 months)
Hood: Southpark
How long have you lived in Charlotte? I have lived in Charlotte for 31 years minus 4 when I lived in Charleston, SC to attend the College of Charleston
Tell us about your work with The Levine Children’s Hospital.
I have been involved with Children’s Hospital since the beginning. Charlotte is fortunate to have a children’s hospital of LCH’s caliber. I recently joined the LCH Board of Ambassadors. It is a brand new board that was formed to advance LCH’s current programs and services to future healthcare needs by building community support and developing philanthropy.
What are you most proud of about yourself?
I am most proud of my family. My parents are my role models who have taught me the importance of giving back to the community and helping others. My husband is my best friend. He is always positive and optimistic and the best father that I could ever imagine. My kids are my world. My daughter has learned philanthropy at an early age thanks to my parents. She recently made cards for the kids at the children’s hospital and donated all of her money from birthday presents, holidays, and her favorite-selling lemonade.
How does Alfred stay so calm all the time?
He is one of the most laid back people I know. I don’t know! I wish I knew his secret. He definitely balances me out.
What is your Favorite thing about living in Charlotte?
I love the Fall. The weather is perfect and Panther season is my favorite.
Favorite Date nightspot without kids?
McNinch House
Favorite Family activity?
Going to the beach and mountains
Best food in Charlotte is?
Barringtons, BLT, and Wendy Bentien’s house when she cooks for me.
Who is your celebrity crush?
Tom Brady and Josh Duhamel
What is the most important lesson you have learned from your children?
Patience and unconditional love
Minivan or SUV?
Well, for my 30th birthday I was having a crisis of exiting my 20’s so I bought myself a Honda Odyssey and love it.
Finish this sentence “ I am so happy I met Wendy because _______________” (I threw this in as a joke but we are rolling with it)
She cooks the best food including pasta from scratch and homemade cheese, makes me laugh at everything she says, and has legs that motivate me to work out.
Since you also have an infant what is the one thing you would tell first time moms with newborns?
Getting your baby on a schedule as early as possible is very important. Babies thrive on schedules and consistency. Organization is also key. I have a great book that I got at Milky Way in Charlotte where I record Bentley’s feedings and naps. It is especially helpful when I have a babysitter so I know he stays on schedule and the sitter can look back in the book to prior days if she has any questions about what time he eats or sleeps.
How do you stay so freakishly organized? It makes me look like a hoarder!
Haha. Don’t open any of my drawers! I am working with a home organization company called Simplicity that has helped me organize the problem areas of my house. They also work with children to teach them organization skills. It has been especially helpful for the playroom.
Happiest part of the day?
My happiest part of the day is when my husband gets home from work and we get to get spend time as family with Mindy and Bentley.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I don’t know where I see myself tomorrow so 10 years is a stretch. My dream is to continue to be happily married with 2 more wonderful kids and to be more involved with helping others in Charlotte and beyond.

I have known Amy for almost seven years. I was Mindy’s nanny for nearly four years. Those were such happy years for me, being with such a wonderful family and such a sweet, beautiful child. I married and moved from the area to Lake Norman with my husband. It was wonderful to see Amy and Alfred marry — they are a strong couple, and Alfred was the perfect person for Amy. Both families are loving human beings. They are the “best of the best” and will serve as perfect role models. Now little Bentley has come to enrich their lives. Amy and Alfred will continue to be wonderful parents, and Mindy is the perfect “big sister.” I am happy to see that Amy was selected as Smarty Mom — he deserves it.
