When I was a child, my mom would answer my cries of boredom with one simple phrase, “Boredom is a luxury.” Damn straight it is. I haven’t been bored since 2006. I want to be bored. I long to be bored. I am begging to be bored.
I want to have no plans for the day. I want to have nothing to do. I want to use the bathroom in peace. (Okay, that last request has nothing to do with boredom, but still, I’d like to throw it out there.)
Point is, mommies don’t get bored. Kids do. Toys entertain tykes for only so long. The more toys they have, the more distracted they become. Result? Instead of playing, they will simply follow your every move while you attempt to mop the kitchen floor.
I’m done giving my daughter interesting choices of games and activities. She just rejects them and continues to run circles around me. So, here is my “new and improved” list of suggestions for the next time the word “bored” is uttered in my household.
1. Clean your room
2. Clean my room
3. Clean the kitchen
4. Clean the play kitchen
5. Clean your bathroom
6. Clean my bathroom
7. Clean Barbie’s bathroom
8. Clean Barbie’s Dream Van
9. Clean my SUV
10. Read
P.S. This list applies to kids, spouses, and possibly pets. Now, go to bed . . .

I tell mine the same, clean. I usually get an eye roll and suddenly nobody is bored! And out of sight!
Mine clean bathrooms when they are bored, they have learned very quickly not to say that to me, if they slip up and complain they are bored I usually respond with “I can fix that, is that what you want to happen” and they very quickly find something to do.
perfect. i love the play kitchen/barbie incorporation.
Preach on, Krista! Our kids have so much more to keep them entertained than we ever did and the result is that they are underfoot even more, wanting us to entertain them. I’m over that. I tell mine “Go entertain yourself or go lie down in your room.” (which is a nice version of: GetOutMyFace) The next time my oldest utters “I’m bored”, I am using the one from AWH: “I can fix that, is that what you want to happen?” Brillz.
I agree with you a 100%. My mom never entertained us. I am putting these kids to work. In honor of you I made my kids do the dishes and load the dishwasher. Glorious. I am willing to sacrifice some plates for this one.
I am so with you. I am over the “Mom, what should we do now? There is nothing to do!” What? I now have the answer for my twin boys: Go clean my room. Love it.
I love this! My six-year old is starting to ENJOY cleaning/ organizing. She helped me organize our craft cabinet the other day instead of watching a movie with her brother. What kind of child am I raising???
