Let’s say you have a fun date night out with your husband and both of you are a little over-served. We all know that driving home after drinking is a very bad idea, but you don’t want to call a cab because you need your car in the morning. What’s a Smarty mom to do? Call Zingo! Zingo is a fabulous new service in the Charlotte area that provides designated drivers who safely drive you and your car home. Here’s how it works:
1. Call Zingo at 704-804-8000 about 15 to 20 minutes before you need the ride (program the number into your cell phone now!).
2. Your designated driver arrives on a super cool collapsible motorbike. He folds his motorbike up in a bag and puts it in your trunk. It’s really compact – it even fit into a friend’s small convertible.
3. Your Zingo driver drives you and your car home.
4. After you’re safely home, he gets on his motorbike and drives away.
So, last Friday night was the perfect opportunity for me to try Zingo. My husband and I were at a party following a golf tournament. My husband played in the tournament all day and I met him at the party, so we both had our cars. We decided early in the night that we would call Zingo and arrange for them to pick us both up at 10:30. They were right on time, waiting on their scooters. My driver Thomas had the privilege of driving my minivan home, while Steven drove my husband. Thomas gave me a form to fill out, including information about my auto insurance (details about Zingo’s insurance coverage are available on the company’s website). Thomas was super nice, and I drilled him with questions about the company. When we arrived home, he totaled my trip and I paid him. Then he unfolded his scooter, put on his reflective gear and drove off to his next pick-up (see the picture). Costs are $15 flat fee for the pick up and $3 per mile (plus tip). It actually cost less than a 2-way cab trip. It was a great experience, and I will use them again.
Zingo is a European concept that is apparently very popular in cities like London. The US version started in Atlanta, and three UNC grads opened a franchise in Charlotte in March 2008. They currently have 5 motorbikes in Charlotte. All of their drivers are background checked and drug screened – I felt completely safe with my driver. They operate seven nights a week. More information about the service is available at http://www.zingocharlotte.com/.
So, the next time you need a ride home for you and your car, call Zingo…and tell them that Charlotte Smarty Pants sent you!
