What is the best thing about being a father to a little girl?
What is the funniest thing Addi has ever said to you?
We were at the circus recently and Addi looked at me and said, “Daddy, you are my best friend!” This was out of the blue and I had never even heard her say that. Well, as you can imagine, tears welled up in my eyes and I was so happy. She promptly turned around and said to her Mommy, “Mommy, you are my best friend!” I cracked up laughing because to me it was very funny.
What is your favorite weekend activity?
I really like to take Addi out on the boat. She loves the water and really likes to go fast!
What is your favorite thing to do with Addi after work?
Take her to the park.
Favorite place to eat out with the whole family?

Favorite place to eat out without Addi?

My family of course, but for all of you that wanted a realistic answer – Directv for sports.
How were you diagnosed with lung cancer?
I had being feeling sick (like a cold) and had a cough. My wife MADE me go to the doctor because I was keeping her up at night. I went in Feb 06 and he gave me some medicine, and then went back in May because I was not getting better. June 1, 2006, I got the news of stage IV lung cancer. It was a shock of course.
What is a typical day like?
For me, I have been lucky. I still work “full” time, but I do have to go to pulmonary rehab 3 times per week. I try my best to be in a great mood, tell everyone something good, and get home to see my family. I do have to go to Duke every three weeks for chemo and that is tough, but overall I am just trying to get along. Because I have a certain kind of lung cancer, I am also trying to get a transplant. We will see…..
I know that early in your diagnosis, you changed your diet. Can you describe what you did and why?
Basically – eat right. We eat too much and not good things. Cutting out sugar, soft drinks, etc. I wish I would have done this when I was well, not just to combat something. I hope everyone really takes a look at what they are feeding their kids. I know it is hard, and yes, Addi eats chicken nuggets, but we try to make sure she is eating right when we can control it. She loves broccoli and things like this, because we introduced it to her.
Tell us about starting Addi’s Cure?
Christi and I were sitting around in Sept 06 and really just got inspired to do something for lung cancer research. We decided to start Addi’s Cure and have some events. They are to raise awareness and money, but also be FUN! It has been rewarding and really special. It is also something that can continue long after I am gone.
What can we do as a community to help?
Don’t assume someone with lung cancer SMOKED! I did not! Tell someone about Addi’s Cure and make them support us! I would love your support in the form of coming to an event like Touch a Truck or sending a tax-deductible donation.
What is the one thing you want us to know about Christi?
She loves the Jayhawks from Kansas University. No really – she is a rock for me and I could not live through this without her.
What have you learned from living with cancer?
Time is precious. Make every second count. Family is everything!
