So here is the skinny. Carowinds opens on March 21st. It will be open weekends only until June 1st. This year they are also opening new attractions, Bondi Beach, a 600,000 gallon wave pool and Yo-Yo, a whirling swing ride for kids and adults. This is a great park for families and an awesome place to take out of town guests. I personally would not take a child under 4. It can be overwhelming and a lot for a child to take in. Navigating with a stroller or a wagon can get cumbersome and it is a lot to deal with especially when the park is crowded.
Nickelodeon Central is an area of family rides based on Nickelodeon charactors, Dora, Backyardigans, Little Bill and Lazy Town, etc. The minimum height requirement is 36 inches to 46 inches. There is plenty to do in this area to keep the little ones occupied. My recommendation if you are taking a wide age range of children is to break apart in groups with an adult with older kids and an adult with the younger. Nothing is worse than being in the heat or in line with a child who can’t get on the ride and is tired of watching big sis or brother have all the fun.
The rest of the park is broken into family rides (bumper cars, gondolas and Rip Roaring Rapids), thrill rides (Roller coasters) and live shows. The shows are very kid-friendly, they have an ice show and “Dora’s Sing Along Adventure” as well as “Meet the Nicktoons.”
Boomerang Bay is the waterpark area of Carowinds and has something for everyone in the family to enjoy. For kids under 48 inches, they will have to wear a life jacket and every child under 42 inches must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Carowinds does provide life jackets free of charge.
To get a season pass or not? One benefit of the season pass this year is the park is offering the opportunity to be the first to reserve a Bondi Beach cabana (chair-side service, privacy and spacious accommodations). Now through April 6, Season Passholders only can make reservations and receive a 30% discount off daily cabana rental. There are no date restrictions with the 30% discount – but you must reserve your the date(s) no later than Sunday, April 6. You also get free parking and free admission into Scarowinds in October.
If you are going to be buying 4 or more tickets, the price for VIP is $59.95. This includes free parking, free admission to Scarowinds and first in line access, early entrance into Boomerang Bay, season pass parking area and several otehr perks. If you are buying single season passes the price is $69.95 (ages 3-61, taller than 48 inches) and $54.95 (ages 3 and up inder 48 inches and 62+). This is a great price if you will be going to the park more than once. My recommendation would be to buy the season pass if you even think you may be going more than once or if you have an older child (8+) who may be invited to go with friends throughout the summer.
Regular admission fees are:
$45.99 – Age 3-61, 45 inches and taller
$35.99 – 3 day advance, Adult,
$19.99 – 3+ under 48 inches and Senior(62+)
Hope this information helps and if any of you are Carowinds Pro’s please pass on all of your tips and advice. See you at the top of the roller coaster, I’ll be in the front car with my arms up!

Don’t forget that under age 3 are free!!
I live within three miles of Carowinds and have to say that this IS the place for kids under age four. Kids are free under age three and there are many, many rides for kids under four. My husband and I will be taking our 11 month old twins along with our three year old. She loved it last year as a 23 month old. Plus, you can catch the shows and plays like Dora. We went as soon as the park opened and left at lunch time just in time to eat and go home for naps. The park was NEVER crowded in the Nicklelodeon section with young kids and we went weekly and mostly on weekends. Now the adult rides had LONG lines but we never waited more than 5 minutes in any line at any time all summer. Can’t beat that, I would highly recommend getting a season pass. Also, the mall in front of Carowinds (Plaza Fiesta)has a fantastic indoor (50 feet tall) play area. Cost is $1.00 per child and per parent. You can play in there for an hour, they rotate so it’s not too crowded. Many mommy groups around here are planning playdates there and you hear kids screaming when they have to leave. There are many tables, chairs, and benches and lots of food places. If you haven’t been in awhile it is completely renovated and is worth the drive. Your kids will love you for it.
