My sister-in-law Marie just had a beautiful baby girl in September. This is their first and in those first weeks she was itching to get out but you know how it is with your first baby… you are so tired and everything is so scary and new. I encouraged her to go to the mall and just stroll around. It’s not too busy on weekdays and you can walk and people watch without too much stress. She was concerned about changing and feeding the baby. Your best bet that I have found at SouthPark Mall is Nordstrom. On the main level (the mall level), on the far side of the store they have bathrooms. When you walk in, the stalls and sinks are to the right and the breastfeeding/changing area is to the left. It’s prviate without being closed off and it has 2 comfortable chairs to sit in. When I had Claire it was pretty new so it was very clean. It’s an oasis for a new mother who wants to feed her baby and not flash the whole mall. Belk also has bathrooms with chair that can be used for breastfeeding but anyone who walks in the bathroom passed right by you – which is fine, but you lose the privacy factor. I have not been to Neimens yet, but I bet they have nice bathrooms.
Do you have tips about other good places to breastfeed at the mall or anywhere in Charlotte? Leave us a comment and we’ll post the best answers.

Great article.
down the long hallway marked “restrooms” near the apple store there is a family bathroom with a bench right in front. hardly anyone is ever around there.
I have breastfed my daughter in the Nordstrom lounge mentioned and found it very comfortable and surprisingly private. Then again, I’ve also found a way to tactfully breastfeed in the North Lounge of the Club Level of Panther’s Stadium without anyone noticing! Thank goodness for Bebe au Lait nursing aprons! Astrid
Sadly, in the changing room at Belks. My son is a loud eater and likes to take his time. I’m sure they thought I was stuffing clothes in my bags.
You could also try a nursing cover, which makes it possible to nurse almost anywhere with out anyone noticing. They have these really cute ones at The Milky Way in Dilworth.
There is also a restroom near the Steve Madden shoe store that has a few comfortable chairs in a little area of the ladies room. It’s very quiet in there and a comfortable place to nurse.
There is a family bathroom in the men’s suit section (of all places!!??)at Belk at SouthPark Mall which is always empty. They also have a kiddie-size toilet along side a full-size one..very convenient for the little ones new to using the potty.
Why worry about where to breastfeed? I fed my daughter in the food court and no one even noticed. We need to all be more comfortable with breastfeeding in public and it will make other comfortable as well. In many other parts of the US – Boston for example – you wouldn’t even think about having to go sit in a bathroom to feed your child!

Today my baby started crying in Belk bc he was hungry. I quickly found a fitting room and fed him in there. The gentleman working that area kept knocking on the door asking if I was ok. When I was done he was STANDING outside the fitting room door waiting for me to leave. I smiled at him and he said “Did everything work out for you?” And was looking me up and down (I’m sure he thought I was shoplifting since I didn’t have any clothes in my hands). I smiled and said “actually I was feeding my son. Thanks” and walked past him. It shouldn’t be this big of a problem to breastfeed… I would almost rather do it out in the open if this is how people are going to act for using a vacant changing room.
