This spring, we are all obsessed with deer antlers. Like crazy obsessed. When I connected with local Smarty Mom and jewelry artist, Kara Dail, I knew I had to add her gems at Jacob Foster Designs to our list of Smarty must-have’s for Mother’s Day!
Kara is a new jewelry designer and mom of two boys. Last summer while vacationing in DeBordieu, a light bulb went off and Jacob Foster Designs was born. She’s inspired by her husband’s love of hunting and her boys’ love of nature.

Natural wood beaded necklace featuring orange patterned recycled powder glass beads and a naturally shed deer antler. These recycled powder glass beads are made by crushing glass to a fine powder and heating it so that the particles fuse together. The glass is then poured into clay molds, with a cassava leaf stem used to make the hole. They are baked in an oven and the glass fuses and the cassava stem burns up. I’m pretty sure I’m most excited about this item in our Mother’s Day Giveaway, for a variety of reasons. Meet PrayerBowls, one of the most touching stories I’ve ever heard. PrayerBowls was started by Karen Berry, who happens to be the beautiful wife of an old college friend of mine. I’m going to let Karen tell you her story, it’s absolutely amazing, just like her PrayerBowls:
I am a believer in the power of prayer. A few years ago I was extremely sick. Family, friends, and even strangers lifted me up to God in prayer as I went through many surgeries and treatments.
One day, I was again amazed by Christ showing His love through others: a woman named Angie whom I had never met before told me that she had prayed daily for me for a year. She went on to share that she kept a prayer bowl, and each day, she’d ask the Lord’s blessing on the people who were in need at that time. I loved the idea so much that I quickly decided to create a distinctive prayer bowl for myself and a few others, and with that, PrayerBowls were born.
So many times we hear of a prayer request at church, Bible study, or even through email, and we pray for that person at that time. Often, we quickly forget to offer a prayer again while we shuffle back into our daily routine, but God tells us to pray continuously. So, simply place your prayer bowl where you sit daily, and jot down the names of those whom you’re praying for on a slip of paper. Then, each day, alone or with your family, lift up those friends in need to the Lord.

Tracy Curtis is one of my favorite writers – she’s hilarious, witty, and honest about being a mom, wife, girlfriend, sister, and daughter. And guess what, she’s LOCAL. Yep, we get to claim Tracy as a fellow Charlotte mom. I read her Charlotte Observer columns religiously for years, and I was so excited when she started publishing her columns as book collections. Her first, “Holidazed,” found the humor in the Christmas mayhem, and her second, “Trophy Wife,” will have you laughing through the craziness of “May-cember.”
I find her books to be the PERFECT mom books – her columns are smart enough yet short enough to get my attention and hold it there for the perfect amount of time :-). You can read a story in carpool line, in between innings, or during the five minutes it takes to fall asleep at night. I promise you’ll laugh, relate, AND feel like you actually accomplished something – I mean, who can say they started and finished something in one sitting?

The Whole Tulip

The Whole Tulip, is made up of two sisters: Adri Warrick and Carolyn Hallett. They’re local Charlotte moms and integrative health coaches. Their focus is on helping people navigate through the confusing “food system” to eat better, live better, and feel better. I did a Whole Tulip cleanse a couple of years ago, and was BLOWN AWAY by how much I learned about health, food, and my own body. Adri and Carolyn are not only informative, but they’re smart, compassionate, witty, and realistic (my fave part!). 
They believe that the single most important thing they can do to help their clients feel and live better is to help each person understand her bioindividuality. What is bioindividuality?
