This First Annual Race is to benefit Grow Charlotte & CharMeck Farm to School whose goal is to Help fight childhood obesity in Charlotte and the Greater Mecklenburg Community. CharMeck Farm to School targets pre?school and elementary students with age appropriate lesson plans and working gardens. Grow Charlotte! targets older students and their communities with Earth Science compatible lessons and community gardens. Presently, Grow Charlotte! and CharMeck Farm to School have pooled their resources and have started programs with the Bethlehem Center Head Start program, Saint John’s Baptist Day Care, and Pinewood Elementary School involving approximately 300 children. Thus far, we have established 16 ? 4’ x 10’ gardens, provided classroom support, and lesson plans for each of the classes. A number of other schools and after school programs, in and around Charlotte, have approached us, but until we can raise funds, we are limited to the existing programs.

The mall is hosting Movies Under The Stars, a free night of movies and more, where shoppers can enjoy featured movies, themed for families, under the stars on an impressive 30-foot screen. To jump-start the night, pre-event activities will entertain the crowd beginning at 7:00 p.m. including a live band. Tasty concessions and cold drinks will be available for purchase all night. Bring lawn chairs and blankets! This weeks music is Jay Mathey and the movie is “Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Squeakquel”.

Celebrate the rich Celtic heritage in this region with concerts by Beoir agus Ceoil and the Loch Norman Pipe Band! Bring your own chairs and blankets and enjoy an evening of Scottish Highland Dancing, Piping, and Drumming. Bob’s BBQ will be available for purchase, in addition to vendors selling their wares. Various children’s activities will be available throughout the evening, including a haggis toss, children’s “horse” footrace, and more. Cost is free but individuals are encouraged to donate $5, $10 for families. All proceeds help to raise funds for the museum’s Light the Hill campaign to provide authentic illumination for the evening events on the Homesite.

Davidson Community Playersresponded to the need for live theater for children with the creation of the Connie Company in 1996. As the youth and education division of Davidson Community Players, Connie Company incorporates theatre education, practical experience, and an emphasis on fun for young people, ages 4 to 18. A wide variety of programs, from classes to camps to productions, run year round and are primarily housed at Armour Street Theatre in Davidson. Connie Company is calling all young actors in grades six through 12 for the musical “Once on This Island, Jr.” and Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” See website for details on what to bring to the audition.
