Smarty Scoop on Weekend Activities: 8/20-8/22

Another great weekend in the Queen City Smarties! It is also the last weekend before school is back in session, let’s make the most of it. Try a last summer visit to Discovery Place, catch the Grey Seal Puppets with Children’s Theatre, visit the Nature Museum, try one of our Day Trips or catch a movie. The important thing is to get out and enjoy!

Grow and Let Go is a group of Moms, Friends, and Consignors that gather all of our gently outgrown clothing, strollers, bouncies,toys, DVDs, sports equipment and books and sell them at drastically discounted prices twice a year. Free admission.

A car seat checking station is where certified child passenger safety technicians assist you with car seat installation. There they will teach you the correct way to install your child seat, provide safety recommendations, and answer any questions that you may have. For best results, please bring: your child, your vehicle and vehicle owner’s manual, your child safety seat and all parts, accessories, and instructions, a second adult to assist with watching your child while you learn how to install your car seat . No appointment is needed, and seats from all manufacturers are welcome. Instruction lasts approximately 30 minutes per car seat. Cost is free.

Run Charlotte Grow Charlotte 5K & 1K Fun Run

This First Annual Race is to benefit Grow Charlotte & CharMeck Farm to School whose goal is to Help fight childhood obesity in Charlotte and the Greater Mecklenburg Community. CharMeck Farm to School targets pre?school and elementary students with age appropriate lesson plans and working gardens. Grow Charlotte! targets older students and their communities with Earth Science compatible lessons and community gardens. Presently, Grow Charlotte! and CharMeck Farm to School have pooled their resources and have started programs with the Bethlehem Center Head Start program, Saint John’s Baptist Day Care, and Pinewood Elementary School involving approximately 300 children. Thus far, we have established 16 ? 4’ x 10’ gardens, provided classroom support, and lesson plans for each of the classes. A number of other schools and after school programs, in and around Charlotte, have approached us, but until we can raise funds, we are limited to the existing programs.

SouthPark invites local families and friends to gather on the lawn at Symphony Park to enjoy some sizzling summer entertainment!  The mall is hosting Movies Under The Stars, a free night of movies and more, where shoppers can enjoy featured movies, themed for families, under the stars on an impressive 30-foot screen. To jump-start the night, pre-event activities will entertain the crowd beginning at 7:00 p.m. including a live band.  Tasty concessions and cold drinks will be available for purchase all night. Bring lawn chairs and blankets! This weeks music is Jay Mathey and the movie is “Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Squeakquel”.

Now in its fifth season, Movies in the Park @ Ballantyne has become a summer tradition. In addition to a free movie, there’s free bottled water, popcorn, door prizes and face painting for the kids. Come early, lay out a blanket and lounge chairs on the grass and bring your own meal and make a night of it! This week’s movie is ”Monsters Vs Aliens”. Cost is free.

Salsa Cinderella
Children’s Theatre of Charlotte @ ImaginOn

Grey Seal Puppets brings their whimsical approach to storytelling and exquisite puppet design to Salsa Cinderella. This production takes a fresh look at the story of Cinderella, a classic tale of love and footwear retold with a spicy twist. With an original musical score by Charlotte composer John Alexander, Salsa Cinderella will have you fighting the urge to mambo in the aisles! Cost is $12-$14.

Celtic Festival
The Charlotte Museum of History

Celebrate the rich Celtic heritage in this region with concerts by Beoir agus Ceoil and the Loch Norman Pipe Band! Bring your own chairs and blankets and enjoy an evening of Scottish Highland Dancing, Piping, and Drumming. Bob’s BBQ will be available for purchase, in addition to vendors selling their wares. Various children’s activities will be available throughout the evening, including a haggis toss, children’s “horse” footrace, and more. Cost is free but individuals are encouraged to donate $5, $10 for families. All proceeds help to raise funds for the museum’s Light the Hill campaign to provide authentic illumination for the evening events on the Homesite.

Davidson Community Player’s Connie Company Auditions

Davidson Community Playersresponded to the need for live theater for children with the creation of the Connie Company in 1996. As the youth and education division of Davidson Community Players, Connie Company incorporates theatre education, practical experience, and an emphasis on fun for young people, ages 4 to 18.  A wide variety of programs, from classes to camps to productions, run year round and are primarily housed at Armour Street Theatre in Davidson. Connie Company is calling all young actors in grades six through 12 for the musical “Once on This Island, Jr.” and Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” See website for details on what to bring to the audition. Auditions times are: “Once on This Island, Jr.,” Sun., 2:00pm; and Mon., 7:00pm. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Sat., 2:00pm; and Sun., 7:00pm.
