When you have a daughter, she expects you to be an expert braider, pig tailer, bunner, and curler. As Smarty Cheryl penned, if you don’t have any game when it comes to styling your girl’s hair then there’s lots of help on the interwebs, especially if you are like me and this gene doesn’t come naturally.
My hair is fine, thick and STICK STRAIGHT. Master of the obvious, I know. As a young girl, I used all manner of tools to make my hair curly. ‘Cause if your hair is straight you want it curly and if your hair is curly you want it straight. Duh.
At ages 7 and 8, I was too young to use heat styling tools and making my hair curly was not high on my mother’s list of to do’s so I had to take matters into my own hands.
Back then, I tested many types of “sleep-in” rollers.
Sock rollers
Did anybody else do this? All of my friends did this! I would wash my hair before bed, put in mousse, roll it up using socks, and tie the socks off at the end. This is definitely the poor man’s way of curling your hair however I was a sock-rolling-fool.
Bendy rollers
I soon got sick of sock rolling so I upgraded to the bendy rollers . These were a little more precise and made spiral curls that could be styled the next morning. Remember the spiral perm? The bendy rollers could help you fake it.
These bad boys were (and still are!) the best sleep-in rollers. My grandmother, who I called Nanny, supplied me with a set of pink sponge rollers and I never looked back. These suckers worked their magic on my pin straight hair.
Nanny went to the beauty shop every Friday to get her hair washed and set. The sponge rollers were a major part of her hair beauty routine.

Sleep-in hair curling is making a come back!
My daughter came home one day asking if she could sleep in rollers to make her hair curly.
She got this tip from a friend and really wanted to try it so we were off to Walgreen’s to pickup some sponge rollers.
Man, these things work just like I remembered!
Her hair is just as straight as mine however not very thick. It curled up like Shirley Temple!
It was crazy curly when the curlers came out in the morning. After a full day, the curls had relaxed to waves.
