“If you need something done, ask a mom. If nobody else can do it, she’ll always find a way.” Vicki Reece, Author
Our motivation
Someone once described motherhood to me as walking around with your heart outside of your body. I couldn’t agree more. Just imagining our children suffering is painful, so we are fierce protectors of their well-being, both present and future. This is why so many moms care about climate change.
For many of us, wanting to solve climate change is about protecting the future for our children and grandchildren. True, adults today will feel the impact of the changing climate in our lifetimes (and many already do), but unless we reverse the warming trend, things will be worse in the coming decades.
Feeling helpless?
hen I talk to people about climate change, they often tell me they’re concerned, but feel it is out of their hands. While a problem this big can be overwhelming, I whole-heartedly believe it is solvable…by us! I also find that taking action helps me feel less anxious and more hopeful. There is a lot we can do as individuals, and there are some organizations of amazing moms showing us the way.
It is said that if you need something done, give it to the person with the most to do. I would argue, in many cases, that person is a mom. There’s no denying it – moms get stuff done.
Check out these incredible mom-led efforts to solve climate change:
Science Moms
This group of nonpartisan climate scientist moms is “working to give our children the planet they deserve”. They are here to educate, and they also give tips for taking action. They say 3 ways people can help include:
– Swap: when you can, switch to electric appliances, tools, and cars (it’s a great time to consider an EV)
– Share: talk to family and friends about what you learn and the changes you make
– Speak up: ideas include joining an organization, reaching out to leaders, voting
Moms Clean Air Force
With a mission to “protect children from air pollution and climate change”, this powerhouse organization has over 1.5 million members. They educate and advocate for a better world for our kids. They offer lot of ways for people to get involved and have chapters in states around the country.
I’m betting on moms
I am a big fan of both of these organizations, and their websites are packed with reliable information and ideas about how to help. If I had to bet on one group of people to solve climate change, I would put put my money on moms. When we set our minds to something, we are unstoppable.
Smarties, let’s do something about climate change. Learn about it. Think about it. Talk about it.
