You might already know about this unconventional shop in downtown Davidson called the Rumor Mill Market. You likely do because it’s that awesome. But if you don’t, then let me introduce you. If you are looking for great gift ideas, unique home furnishings, or some inspiration for your next project, this is your place. Think Chip and Joanna Gaines’ ‘rustic farmhouse’ style combined with a touch of eclectic and funky. The Rumor Mill Market is set up similar to the concept of the Black Lion retail stores and serves as the home to over 80 local artisans who create and find fun, unique items and decor.
The Rumor Mill Market opened four years ago and was the brainchild of Janie & Scot Slusarick. Back then, it began as a 2,000 square foot space that has grown into what is now over 12,000 square feet, making it the largest retailer in Davidson. Janie and Scot had “a vision to offer local artists a place to showcase and sell their creations,” according to Janie. From knick knacks to handcrafted dining room tables to jewelry and everything in between, there is something for everyone.
It comes naturally to them, as Janie and Scot themselves are artists who find great joy in repurposing items for home decor and beyond. In fact, the majority of the Rumor Mill Market, which was once the site of the historic Linden Mill in Davidson, was designed and built by the couple, utilizing repurposed items with their creative spin. They frequented yard sales on the weekends and even repurposed dry-wall and two-by-fours from closing businesses in the area to create the space they are in now. Their background serves them well in this business – Scot is a builder with Simonini homes and Janie used to manage large eye care businesses for over 28 years.
The Rumor Mill Market has received several local accolades including the “Best Place to Take a Visitor in Lake Norman”, the “#1 Consignment Shop in Lake Norman”, the “Best Furniture Store in Lake Norman” and “Best Antique Mall in Lake Norman.”
Branching out from home decor, they recently developed their own line of jams and jellies called “Old North State,” which features all local ingredients from North Carolina farmers. It’s their way of staying true to and supporting the local community. Not only are the jams and jellies extremely tasty – the names they have created for them are just as appealing. For example, “Can’t Carry a Tune in a Bucket” moonshine pickles, “Give You Something to Cry About” chipotle hot sauce, or my personal favorite “Put Your Big Girl Panties on and Deal with It” strawberry, blackberry and blueberry jam.
The fine folks at the Rumor Mill Market, are giving one lucky smarty a $50 gift card.
