Blasting Out Uterine Fibroids.
If you’ve had the displeasure of dealing with uterine fibroids, then you’re quite familiar with these delightful symptoms. You may have discussed them at length with your OB/GYN and close friends. You know that these tumors are non-cancerous, but you also know the discomfort you experience won’t go away on its own. You have to deal with those hateful pests. Blast them out somehow. Luckily, a hysterectomy is no longer the only option on the table. After all, some studies say that 70% of us will have them by age 50. And I think I speak for all of us when I say that we’d prefer to keep our uteruses.
Today there’s a less invasive approach: Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). It’s a minimally invasive procedure performed by an interventional radiologist, who will guide a small catheter into the uterine arteries. From there, he or she is able to inject tiny particles (about the size of a grain of sand) that block the blood supply to the fibroids. And the rest takes care of itself: the fibroids start to shrink and symptoms start to fade. The whole procedure takes about an hour, and you’ll remain awake but in La La Land, thanks to IV sedation. You’ll probably stay one night in the hospital and can resume light activities within a few days. Most patients are back to their normal routines within a week. That’s it—no scalpels. No surgical scars. No hormone replacements or months-long recovery. And 95% of patients report significant or total relief after UFE.
So tell your friends. Tell your mother, your sister, your daughter. Heck, tell your worst enemy (because we wouldn’t even wish uterine fibroids on them, would we?). And make an appointment with a radiology group that specializes in UFE, like Charlotte Radiology. They’re one of the largest and most progressive radiology practices in the nation, and they employ ONLY board-certified, subspecialized radiologists. They can be trusted with your uterus! So give it a shot. Find out if you’re a candidate for UFE. Blast out those vicious fibroids once and for all, and get back to your life (sans pelvic pain, cramping and heavy bleeding. Oh my!).
