Camp Highlander: A Place Like No Other Right Here in North Carolina
Summer camp. For certain people, those two little words have the power to evoke some of the most heartfelt memories of childhood. I’m one of those people. In the mid-1980s, I was a middle school student living in south Florida. I had spent many of my summers going to day camp or the local pool, however, I was now at the prime age when kids to go to “sleep away” camp, and I was totally intrigued with the idea of leaving my parents and hanging out with friends for a few weeks. I had heard from classmates that there was a really amazing summer camp in western North Carolina called Camp Highlander. Rumor had it that it was the most magical place on Earth (and we only lived a mere four hours from Disney World). So, of course, I just had to see for myself if the rumors were true.
They most certainly were.
Camp Highlander (otherwise known as CH) is in Mills River, North Carolina, located about 20 minutes outside of Asheville. I had the pleasure of attending CH from 1984–1987, and again in 1989 (my parents made me take the summer of 1988 off from camp to attend driver’s ed class. A discount on insurance trumped my summer fun, which makes total sense to me as an adult). One thing is for sure: There is no feeling like the one you get in the pit of your stomach as you turn down Dalton Road toward camp. The campers and staff at CH become a second family. I spent four years as a camper and one as a C.I.T. (Counselor in Training). Then, like so many kids, I transitioned into college life and no longer attended camp. I closed that wonderful chapter of my life, or so I thought.
Fast-forward 22 years later. In 2011, I attended a Camp Highlander alumni reunion at CH. I had not seen camp since I was a senior in high school, and, needless to say, it was absolutely surreal. From the moment that I stepped foot on camp again, all those fond memories instantly flooded back. What also struck me was the feeling that I could completely be myself again. As adults, we wear so many different hats – from mommy to nurse to corporate team member – that we often lose ourselves in the chaos of life. Just as it had done for me as a child, Camp Highlander gave me permission to just be me. It was truly liberating. As a child, CH was a home away from home; it provided a safe place to try new things and gave me life skills that I still use to this day. Now, I am a writer, and I most certainly gained the self-confidence and resilience needed in a creative field through the challenges and adventure that Camp Highlander offered.
These days, I am very blessed to be part of the Camp Highlander staff. Additionally, both my children are campers at Highlander and we attend Family Camp together every year. Camp Highlander embraces all children so openly and offers dozens of exciting activities and opportunities for kids to build self-esteem, confidence and character. Camp Highlander truly is A Place Like No Other.
