Smarties, we bring you an in-depth interview with our friends at Charlotte Christian School as we kick off the 2014-15 Open House Season.
Christ-centered. College preparatory. Educating the whole child.
Established in 1950, Charlotte Christian School is a Christ-centered, college preparatory, independent, non-denominational school serving students in grades JK-12. Our vision for students includes the integration of a Biblical worldview into a curriculum where character, values and essential life skills are emphasized and modeled by a professional and dedicated faculty. This Christian philosophy of education is at the core of all areas of study. A rigorous academic program is offered including strong co-curricular offerings with successful athletic and fine arts programs. As a Christ-centered school, students are taught how to integrate Biblical truth and learning into their daily lives to impact the culture for Christ.
For more than 60 years, Charlotte Christian has nurtured and educated the whole child — heart, mind, body and soul — and provided a balanced, yet challenging college-preparatory curriculum that includes more than 45 honors and Advanced Placement classes; 50 athletic teams; and a broad fine arts program encompassing visual, musical and theatrical skill development. The student population of more than 1,000 reflects a geographical, denominational, racial and ethnic diversity. Every student participates in local, national and/or international service projects.
Charlotte Christian is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS-CASI), an accreditation division of AdvancEd. The school was recently recognized as a 2014 N.C. Family Friendly 50 Workplace by Charlotte Parent Magazine and named to The 50 Best Christian Schools in America list.

What’s new at Charlotte Christian?
Hendrick Center for Arts and Science
The Hendrick Center for Arts and Science is a new 20,000 square foot building that opened in the fall of 2014 that now serves as the new main entrance for the school and includes classroom space that serves the entire JK-12 community. The building is part of the school’s 2020 Vision Strategic Plan and was made possible by the generous gifts of friends and families of the school, including Mr. and Mrs. Rick Hendrick. The new building houses the Lower School STEM Lab; Lower School Technology Lab; Lower School Media Center; Lower School Music; Lower, Middle and Upper School Visual Arts; Middle School Latin; Upper School Math; Middle and Upper School Orchestra and Digital Music; as well as lower school administrative offices and academic services personnel.
iKnights Instructional Technology Initiative
The new iKnights academic instructional technology program builds on the 2020 Vision Strategic Plan for the school and brings more Apple technology into the classroom to continue the focus on communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking – traits of a 21st century thinker. From new MacBook Air devices for every upper school student and teacher to iMacs in the lower school technology lab in the new Hendrick Center for Arts and Science, every student and teacher in the school will be positively impacted by this 21st century instructional focus.
Technology has forever changed the landscape of our lives. Charlotte Christian has integrated advanced technology in the classroom as the Lower School STEM Lab integrates the learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to middle school students building robotics in an engineering design class and upper school students constructing and testing rockets in Physics classes.
Charlotte Christian Healthy Dining Program
Charlotte Christian has completely renovated the dining hall and revamped menus to provide only healthy options for breakfast, lunch and breaks. Students enjoy an all-inclusive healthy lunch program that is included in tuition. Students can choose from fresh salads, veggies, fruits, a Panini bar that they make themselves, healthy hot lunch selections including a vegetarian option, fresh soups, and more. Sodas have been replaced with juices, flavored water, and milk, and food is prepared without frying to provide healthier options. The school follows a campus-wide “nut aware” program to assist with food allergies including the replacement of peanut butter with sun butter in dining hall offerings. Washable plates, cups, and silverware are also used in place of disposable plates and cups in an effort to be more “green friendly.”
