It’s back-to-school week(s) here in the Queen City! That means we need to get our after school programs in check asap! My absolute favorite activity is one that my daughter has loved since she was three years old – dance. We are so lucky to have such a variety of amazing studios in Charlotte. Today, we introduce you to the Charlotte School of Ballet, with two convenient locations in Cotswold and Belmont.
The Charlotte School of Ballet was founded in 1968 by Gay Porter, one of the most influential ballet instructors in the Greater Charlotte community for over 45 years. This wonderful school offers the finest of training for young students through the professional level. Training begins with the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus, one that is used successfully in eighty-two countries throughout the world, and continues into the Cecchetti Method. Non-syllabus classes are an important part of the student’s training also. Guest teachers are often brought in, to work with the advanced students during the year. Additionally, classes are also offered in tap, jazz, modern dance and Classical Spanish dance by experts in their field.
The Charlotte School of Ballet offers two types of programs– recreational and vocational. The recreational program is designed for the once- or twice-a-week student who enjoys dancing for fun, with a recital once a year. Children’s ballet examinations are offered to these students.
The vocational program is designed for the serious ballet student who’s priority is classical ballet. Examinations in both The Royal Academy of Dancing and the Cecchetti methods are encouraged for these students, as well as membership in the Charlotte Youth Ballet.
Students are not required to have any prior experience in ballet or any other form of dance in order to take classes at the Charlotte School of Ballet. The only necessity is the desire to learn!

We moved to Charlotte 6 weeks ago and I would love to get my daughter involved in dance classes. She has younger twin brothers and has had to sacrifice a lot since becoming a big sister. She’s not once complained and while she definitely enjoys being their favorite playmate, she deserves to do something just for her.
My daughter is fascinated by dance, but has never had the opportunity to take a class. This would be an amazing experience for her!
My oldest wants to start taking dance but cost is a big factor that is making us hesitate. This would really help offset the cost!
She never stops dancing and I’d love to get her a ballet lesson.
My daughter has twinkle toes. She would love to join the beautiful dancers at Charlotte School of Ballet!
My daughter, Piper, struggles daily with physical and emotional issues related to her epilepsy and spd. However, when she dances, all that melts away and you can see that she has joy and pride in what she is able to do in the studio and in performance. She is trying out for her second professional performance this fall. Working with the amazino Gay Porter would be an incredible help!!
My daughter loves to dance for fun, I think she would love the opportunity to dance in a more formal environment.
my daughter loves to dance, is fascjnated by ballet, a couple years ago we were at Southpark and she met a few members of Nutcracker at a Pottery Barn kids store. Our finances make it hard to have her be in something special due to medical bills and medical needs for other family member.
This would be a great little escape for her as she starts a new school this year and it will be midle school for my little girl (she is very petite and short)
Ballet is my daughter’s life. The first program she would sit still for on TV at the age of 4 was The Nutcracker.
Ladies,
My daughter (Sutton) dances at the CSB. It is her passion and her dream and is quickly becoming her life. She was thrilled to be featured in The Charlotte Youth Ballet’s Nutcracker last year and it was the greatest moment of her life! CSB is incredible! SIGN UP!!!!! I’m writing an article about our experience at the school for Smarty Pants. So standby!
