The winter months are no time for relaxation, Smarties. Preschool enrollment time is upon us. Most preschools start the admissions process in late January-February for the next school year. So if calling, touring, and researching preschools has been on your To Do list for quite some time, move it to the top and get going.
The decision to send your child to preschool is a very personal one – the age in which your child begins is completely up to you. I started my oldest in a two-day-a-week preschool program when she was a toddler and never looked back. I knew other moms at that time who waited until their kids were 3 to send them off. Both groups are now happy fourth graders. I truly believe it’s whatever is in the best interest of your child. I am no expert, though. Check out what one of our Smarty experts had to say on the subject here.
Choosing the right preschool is also a very personal decision. Location may play a big role, as might curriculum, religion, hours, days, availability, and friends. We’re SO LUCKY in the QC to have so many amazing preschools. From churches to independents, the preschool scene is alive and well – so alive and well that often times it can be hard to navigate.
I was lucky enough to know about several preschools before my oldest child started (in 2005!!!!) and had zeroed in on one right way (OK, I might be an Alma mater! :-)). I STILL have a preschooler, and wouldn’t change our experience over the last nine years for anything. I have a serious love affair with our little school (ahem, Sharon Presbyterian Weekday School is AMAZING!), and I know many other moms feel the same about their schools. That’s why we wanted YOU, Smarty Charlotte, to give your own little preschool a big ol’ shout out (and some FREE publicity!).
That’s right – we want your feedback on what the best preschools are in town. Here’s how: In the comments section below, shout it from the rooftops. Tell all the new moms, the new Charlotteans, the moms who might need a little switch up in schools – tell them why YOUR preschool is the very best around. Feel free to include links to your preschool’s web site in your comment.
And parents who are looking for a preschool: let this be your guide! There are no better recommendations than from other moms. Let’s get the conversation going.
Smarty Charlotte, let’s hear it!

I agree that Sharon Pres Weekday School is the best!!! I am on year number four and am looking forward to my toddler going next year. Teachers are awesome and the director is the best!!!
Sharon Prez, a hidden gem in SouthPark was a second home to my family for 9 years. All hail Beth Merchant, Director of SPWS!
LOVE LOVE Providence United Methodist Weekday School http://www.providenceumc.org/resources/education/providence-weekday-school and also The Speech Garden Institute https://www.speechgarden.org/ for my child who has communication challenges. I have nothing but positives to say for both of these wonderful schools!
All 3 of our boys have attended University City United Methodist Church Weekday School, over the past 8 years. We could not have found a more caring, nurturing environment for our children. Not only have my children received an incredible foundation for learning but our family has made lasting friendships. The staff is knowledgable and enthusiastic. They have made our boys feel loved while receiving a quality preschool education that has prepared them for kindergarten. Can’t say enough about this school and the entire staff.
Forgot to include the link for University City United Methodist Weekday School – http://www.ucumc.org
Holy Comforter Weekday School is a GREAT preschool! Both of my kids (now 10 and 6) attended this little gem of a school even when we moved to the Lake Wylie area! It’s located in Dilworth but we loved it so much we were willing to make the drive back to our precious school. They enroll kids ages 10 months to 4 years and offer a great play-based program. The teachers are so invested in these kids and mine thrived in this environment. They were more than prepared for Kindergarten. Look them up at http://www.hcweekdayschool.org!
