Smarties, we bring you an in-depth interview with our friends at Trinity Episcopal School for our 2013-14 Open House Season blog series.
Trinity Episcopal School: Creating Scholars, Nurturing Spirituality, Embracing Diversity
At Trinity Episcopal School, we nurture curious and empathetic scholars who go on to high school and college equipped with experience and knowledge of how to live and work as ethical and responsible citizens of the world. Our educational philosophy values the development of essential academic knowledge through collaboration, creative problem solving and differentiation. Rooted in the Episcopal tradition, our program includes both experiential and service learning in a setting that is unique to Trinity and our Uptown location. We embrace diversity not only through our admission process, but through intentional curriculum and through our Honor Code which explicitly vows an appreciation and respect for the uniqueness and gifts of others.
“Let’s go to school!” These words are exclaimed every Monday morning when the entire school community gathers in Jamie’s Courtyard for “Greet the Week”, a student-led assembly featuring songs, prayers, “green” tips from second grade and updates from our Wildcat teams and clubs. This gathering reflects the teaching and learning that define Trinity Episcopal School.
In creating scholars we aim to follow the developmental path of children. Our youngest students, delightfully self-concerned, investigate the things that matter most to them – their families, friends and neighborhoods. Older students explore worlds beyond their own, from medieval castles to Native Americans to Shakespeare.
We believe in a constructivist approach balanced with the teaching of foundational skills. In contrast to an environment where students are passive recipients of facts, formulas or rules, children gain understanding by constructing their own knowledge via guided problem-solving and carefully planned experiences. A workshop model provides the setting for readers, writers and mathematicians to engage deeply in their work, as teachers carefully design differentiated lessons based on students’ readiness and interest.
Our Honor Code shapes us as ambassadors of God’s grace and everlasting love, instilling a lifelong pursuit of learning, a drive to advocate for social justice, and a strong sense of who we are and whose we are. Our service learning relationships provide the context for students to experience the ultimate 21st century skill of cultural dexterity – learning to live and work alongside others with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
As an urban school Trinity has the distinct advantage of an extended campus. Children journey daily to such Center City destinations as ImaginOn, Discovery Place and the Mint Museum, Uptown. Our School’s founders dreamed of an educational community that would become part of the fabric of this city, where the powerful combination of creating scholars, nurturing spirituality and embracing diversity would enable us to inspire, develop and eventually send forth the leaders of tomorrow. You’ll find those future leaders here at Trinity Episcopal School.
