As you’re reading this post, it’s officially the last day of summer in our house. I know for lots of Smarty families, you’ve got one week left; and for others, you’re already in the throws of another school year. Let us not let the summer end without a good re-cap. What will we be talking about when we remember #charlotte #summer2k13 (besides the rise in the use of hashtags)?
Rainbow Looms. Rubber bands multiplied in our house faster than Styrofoam Nerf gun bullets. I’ve now decided I could totally be an orthodontic assistant. After helping create about 1,000 Rainbow Looms over the last three months, I truly believe I could walk into Hull and Coleman Orthodontics and get a job putting rubberbands around millions of tween and teen braces. No questions asked.
My kids looked like Cleopatra with about 10 Rainbow Looms stacked around their necks at all times. Hey, at least they had no chance of becoming rednecks, right? No sun was catching that neck. Not a chance.
Actually, there weren’t that many opportunities to catch a ray of sun because…
Rain. Lots of it. We were slapped hard with a lesson in what it feels like to be a mom in Seattle. Mama no likey. Waking up to another cloudy, moist (sorry, had to use that word) day of figuring out what to do with energetic children ready for another day at the pool – well, it’s not an easy thing. I guess that’s why I am so adept at Rainbow Looms actually. My hydrangeas loved it; my mental health did not. We feel for you, Seattle. Thank goodness you have great coffee and the dawn of grunge because otherwise we would question your sanity. We love Pearl Jam as much as the rest, but if you EVER want to come visit us and our sunshine and heat, our doors are always open. No questions asked. Just be glad you didn’t come this summer.
The one good thing to come from all the rain? Rainbows (geez, I see a theme!). I’ve never seen so many rainbows in one summer. And thankfully if I missed one, all my friends were posting their own on Facebook or…
Instagram. Now, I don’t know if it’s just me, but I do think Instagram got a little more popular this summer with us moms. We discovered the power of the filter, and it’s a beautiful thing, isn’t it? Wrinkles gone. Sallow skin is rosy again. Tired, baggy eyes look a little brighter. Screaming children look angelic. Filtering another gray, soggy day in the QC makes it “artsy.” And isn’t it kinda nice to live an artsy life – or at least pretend to? And those #hashtags! Gotta love getting in on what’s #trending like…
#BlurredLines. Good gosh, Robin Thicke. First of all, did anyone tell you that you look A LOT like Jason Seaver from “Growing Pains”? And, has anyone told you how um, H.O.T. you are despite looking like Mike Seaver’s dad? “Blurred Lines” was this summer’s “Call Me Maybe” – little more X-Rated, though (eh, I wouldn’t mind the men’s 2012 USA Olympic Swim team lip syncing it for us).
Did anyone else find themselves nervously changing the channel when their nine-year-old daughter suddenly started singing about being “domesticated”? And don’t even get me started on that unedited video. I just hope those young girls know how good they have it with those pre-nursing ta-tas. Yes, “Blurred Lines” was the soundtrack of the summer. If I had a Rainbow Loom rubber band for every time I heard that song, I’d make a Rainbow Loom all the way to London to visit…
Kate Middleton. Bless her heart. I know every mother in Charlotte felt a tinge of relief knowing that even if they have the worst mother-in-law, the most intrusive parents, the most obnoxious advice coming from friends, at least they don’t have all the media attention that Kate has. I think we all wanted to give her a big high-five when she came out the day after having the prince looking SPECTACULAR.
Girl! We were all Blurred Lines the day after giving birth, but not Kate. That hair, that make up. I can’t look like that on my BEST day. So, here’s a big Smarty fist-bump across the pond to you, Mama Kate. Your beauty and poise shut everyone up – if only for a second. Proud of you, girl.
So that’s my list. What are YOUR biggest #trends of the summer??
