My husband and I were flipping channels with the kids the other night, and Home Alone came on – remember that movie? I hadn’t seen it in years – I couldn’t remember any really inappropriate parts so I figured it was safe for the kids to watch. OMG – my six-year-old son was cackling – CACKLING – at the movie. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of it before – the slapstick humor was perfect for him.
So that got us thinking: what other movies from our childhood would our kids love now? Skipping the Disney cartoon movies, we tried to think of our Top Ten best movies from the 80s and early 90s for kids ages 7-10 (this was our fun for the car ride home from the Spring Break beach trip – sad, sad). Warning: We haven’t watched all of these recently but have awesome memories of them (so if there are inappropriate parts, they must have gone over our heads as kids because we can only remember the cool parts).
Here’s our list* (in no particular order)! What do you think? What did we miss (because I’m sure we missed a bunch!)??
- Goonies
- The Karate Kid
- Home Alone
- Secret of NIMH
- Free Willy
- Space Camp
- Annie
- The Never Ending Story
- Cloak and Dagger
- The Princess Bride
- E.T.
* Side Note: My husband wanted me to include War Games – but since I never watched that as a kid I couldn’t put it on my list – he did say it is probably for older boys!
Yay! We have something other than Hop and Marmaduke to watch during Family Movie Night!!

I loved a ton of those movies, especially Annie. I also am a huge musical fan and there are so many fun musicals out there – Newsies is great and just hit Broadway! The Sound of Music is also one of my all time faves!!
