I feel completely defeated this year with our Halloween costumes. I’m all about a handmade get-up. But unfortunately, the Plym family was victim to the Costume Express catalog and Spirit Halloween stores set up in abandoned strip malls across the QC. In years past, I usually get to the mailbox first starting in August to intercept the influx of lame Halloween catalogs. This year the catalog out-mailed me. And the one-stop-shop-zero-creativity costumes were purchased – times four.
I’m an all or nothing Halloween costume designer. I’m either balls to the walls or 100% lamo, usually erring on the kick-booty side. Last year was a perfect example. My twins were obsessed with Scooby-Doo and since Daphne has a hip look, my tweener was perfectly content with the group theme as long as little sis was Velma. Seriously, what tween would agree to be Velma when you can be Daphne the beauty queen!
So the week before Halloween 2010, hubby and I put our artistic magic to work making the best team. He, the engineer, and me, the designer – and we whipped up this Mystery Machine tricked out with Scooby Doo tunes to boot – all over a bottle or two of wine. It was our best date weekend ever, feeling so proud of our accomplishment.
So we reveled in the glory of “OMG, look at those Plyms!” and “can I borrow that next year?!” – I know, it was a high like no other. But the problem is – what do you do after a genius costume like that? I found myself crumbling under the pressure every time I was approached with “what are you guys going to be this year?”
Maybe, just maybe, I let those catalogs slip through the cracks. I can’t be sure. One thing I know is certain – when my beautiful, ballerina, dainty 8-year-old begged me to be a green zombie monster, all smushed in a plastic bag of a package, I knew we’d be the biggest disappointment in the hood.
But what can you do? I have to say, it has been an easy ride this year. I’m pretty sure my days of the group Plym costumes are over. I’m ok with that. Really. I’m just thankful my tween didn’t go for those hoochy mama daisy duke costumes that are screaming at her everywhere.
Why don’t you go ahead and upload your BEST costumes ever on our facebook page. It will make you feel so good!
