Smarty Scoop on Weekend Activities: 11/12-11/14

Happy Wednesday Smarties. This is the weekend to get ready for the holidays. If you have family coming in and need seating or even beds, then head down to Nest Furnishings and take advantage of a fantastic sale. Decorations dated, need some ideas, head out to the Southern Christmas Show. This is one of my girls favorite holiday excursions with me. There is much more to enjoy – everything from a play to extreme Monster Trucks and Sheep Dogs! No one gets to be bored this weekend. Get out and Enjoy!

Accessory sales always pick up during this time of year as people turn attention to decorating their own homes and getting others that little something for the person with everything.  Ordering just enough of the right stuff can be tricky, so here’s what we’ve come up with . . . Come plop down in the showroom, grab a catalog from one of the coolest accessory manufacturers we use –  at west end – and a margarita . . . or two.  (See www.atwestend.com)  Already have plans?  Email us the list of stuff you want and we’ll make sure you’re included! We’ll place one mondo order at deep savings over those published in the catalog.  Provided things are in stock (we’ll communicate back) all should be in for the holidays. Interested in adoption? Not sure how to get started? Join SPAFA for a few hours to learn more during National Adoption Month. Our theme for this event is “DEMYSTYFING ADOPTION”. We will discuss myths vs. reality during International or Domestic Adoptions. Carolina Adoption Services will present International adoption. We are confirming our presenter for the domestic discussion. Childcare will also be provided for free at the event. Add a note when you RSVP and let us know if you will need childcare.

Enjoy the Sounds of Christmas at the 43rd annual Southern Christmas Show. With its Joyful choirs, A chiming glockenspiel, Santa’s jolly ho-ho-ho, a welcoming chorus from hundreds of holiday merchants, the crisp crunch of piping hot strudel, and shared laughter with your family and friends. No wonder it’s the South’s favorite holiday tradition. Cost is $3-$9, free under age 6 with paying adult.

Memory Walk- A Walk to End Alzheimer’s
Symphony Park at SouthPark

The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. This inspiring event calls on volunteers of all ages to become Champions and raise funds to support the fight against Alzheimer’s. In addition to the walk, participants will enjoy live entertainment, food and vendors.

Rural Hill Sheep Dog Trials
Rural Hill, Huntersville

Witness more than 100 Border Collies compete in working farm dog tasks to earn points for precision in the time allowed. Family activities include the Dog Sport Demo Field, inflatables, hayrides, mazes, and the 1760’s Davidson Family Homestead site. Non-competing dogs are welcomed but must remain leashed and under their owner’s control.

Ice Palace Unveiling and Santa’s Arrival

Stars from The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader will be featured via a live stream Hollywood to give shoppers nationwide a sneak peek at their holiday motion picture event and lead families in waving magic wands to usher in the holiday season and arrival of Santa Claus at Northlake Mall’s enchanting new holiday display, The Ice Palace. Northlake Mall will transform into a magical winter wonderland with the debut of the Ice Palace. Brimming with the magic of winter and the essence of holiday snow globes, the soaring 30-foot Ice Palace appears to be literally carved from ice. The exhibit features highlights from this holiday season’s highly anticipated movie, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader from Twentieth Century Fox and Walden Media. Bring your entire family to be a part of this very special event. At 6:30, we will be offering refreshments for all. The first 200 families will receive a special gift. Kids Night in Nature

Have a night to yourself and leave the kids with us. With winter upon us we will enjoy a indoor campfire, learn how wildlife hear, see, and feel to get around in the dark, and take a short night hike along the Sierra trail. Dinner will be provided. Survival 101

Discover basic wilderness survival skills like how to build a fire, what can be eaten in a forest and how to find safe drinking water. You never know when you may need these skills. Participants must be able to hike 3-4 miles on uneven terrain. Ages 6 and older. Please call to register.

Miss Nelson Is Missing
Matthews Playhouse

Miss Nelson’s class is the worst behaved in the whole school. Spitballs flying across the room, paper airplanes sailing every which way and uncontrollable children send the gentle, long-suffering teacher, Miss Nelson, over the edge. But the students of Room 207 are in for a surprise when Miss Nelson turns up missing and is replaced by Viola Swamp, a scary substitute teacher who loads them down with homework and wields her ruler like a sword! In desperation, the students set out to find their beloved Miss Nelson … but will they ever get her back?  Lessons of appreciation and respect  are taught with music and dance in this one hour musical based on the book by the same name. Ages 5 and older. Cost is $9-$10.
