While many regular readers of Charlotte Smarty Pants already know the story of one of the “founding mommies”, a lot of the new readers may not be aware of the person whose creativity, energy and love was a part of bringing this web site to life. If you have not taken a few minutes to read the “About Us” section of Charlotte Smarty Pants, click on the “About” tab in the upper left of this page and read about Jen B.
Although we lost Jen B. much too soon, her story did not end when she passed away. She left her friends and family a legacy of memories and relationships that we would not have had without her in our lives. I, as her widowed husband, along with my young daughter was lucky to have the support of many people to help us through the tragic events of Jen’s death. Even so, many of us were surprised and impressed to learn about a local organization called KinderMourn that stepped in with a multitude of information and resources to educate us and comfort us as we learned to deal with Jen’s absence in our lives.
Like most people, I would never have heard of KinderMourn without having a tragic event take place that brought this wonderful organization into my life. They provided me with a vast amount of educational materials, support group information, advice, counseling, and ideas for healthy grieving. In addition, KinderMourn was also a valuable resource for my in-laws, as they joined a support group organized by this organization for parents who have lost adult children. As much as I know that I have benefitted, I also know how important KinderMourn has been to them, which makes this organization stand out even more.
The Hope Floats Duck Race is KinderMourn’s largest fundraiser and provides an incredible opportunity for all of us to support an organization that hopefully we will never need, but is always there for those of us who do. The race will be held at the US National Whitewater Center on April 18th, from 2pm to 5pm and is a great place to take your family your friends and your neighbors. This year will be the third year that my daughter and I will be attending, and we both have a blast participating in all of the activities at the facility. There is a zip line for adults and big kids along with jump-houses, face painting, music and entertainment for children. The event culminates with thousands upon thousands of ducks coming down the channel “racing” to the finish line which is always everyone’s favorite part.
For the past two years, Charlotte Smarty Pants has been one of the largest fundraisers for this race as they put together a team in my late wife’s memory. This year, we hope to do even better. I hope that everyone reading this will buy a duck or two (or ten) for the CSP team… Team Jen Bunich. On top of supporting a wonderful cause, you will have an opportunity to win a multitude of prizes including $5,000 in cash! Best of all, there is no admission charge to this event.
Please support this terrific organization and I, along with all of the terrific people at Charlotte Smarty Pants, hope to see you there. Let’s get Smarty for Charlotte Smarty Pants- Team Jen Bunich…click here to join our team of quackers!
