OK, so I have to plug my FABULOUS hubby this week! As if my sweet & “his-larious” tribute on Mother’s Day wasn’t enough, he is giving me one week off for my official Mother’s Day gift – whew-hoo, I’m the luckiest Smarty in Charlotte! I have to keep pinching myself because it just doesn’t seem real! I can’t remember the last time I had that many days in a row all to myself. Let’s face it, being a mom is much more than a job. It’s a full-time-never-get-a-break-don’t-put-that-in-your-mouth-no-means-no-lifestyle filled with ups and downs, laughs and tears and memories by the minute. But we all could use a little break now and again, even if you are Super-Mom.
So here is how it all unfolded. A few weeks ago, I had pretty much hit rock bottom. I was operating on reserve and was running out quickly. I felt like I was not doing a very good job at anything I was doing – being a mother, a wife, a businesswoman, a friend, you name it, I felt like I wasn’t delivering. When I sat down to think about what was wrong, I quickly realized that I was B-U-R-N-E-D out, 100%! I have been a stay-at-home mom for 8 years, two of those years I created a pseudo-working/pseudo-stay-at-home scenario (best of both worlds in theory, but basically I am managing 2 full-time+ jobs and haven’t mastered it all quite yet!). So when my sweet hubby asked what was wrong, I think he got a little more than he bargained for and it may have frightened him a bit (seriously, what would he do if this mama lost her marbles?!). He asked what I needed and I said… a break for more than 36 hours, and our Mother’s Day plan began.
Randy is shipping me off to Florida to visit my sister the week of Memorial Day. He is taking vacation time from his work to spend time with our kids and fully immerse himself in my role as “mommy”. We thought this could be an inspirational exercise to all families out there. We’re doing an official job-swap, well actually, just he is. I don’t think his real job would hire this crazy mama, even if it was for just 5 days! Randy is blogging daily from Monday, 5/25-5/29 (exception being Smarty Scoop Wed, 5/27) on top of taking care of four kids ages 3-7, crazy carpool schedules, homework, activities, laundry, cooking – I’m getting so excited just typing these words! It will be a true dose of reality-blogging on being mom through the eyes of dad. This is pure brilliance, if I do say so myself!
My hope is not to make my hubby look like he can’t handle his kids (although that would be kinda funny:-), but to throw an idea out there to all dads that hey, you can do this. Give your wife a break, honor her as a mother and wife and it will only cost you a plane ticket, and maybe your sanity, but it’s just temporary!! So stay tuned the week of 5/25 and make sure you tell all your Smarty friends about this set-up. Trust me, Randy will not disappoint, this may be our funniest blogging ever!

How fantastic! I am excited to read the blog.Teri P.
My husband took charge for 48 hours for my college girls’ weekend. I must say I came back recharged and he had a better understanding of my role. I feel like a better wife and mom.
What a great idea! Sounds like you have a great husband. P.S. What a gorgeous picture of your family!!!
