Remember those good ole days of heading out to Have a Nice Day Café and dancing the night away with girlfriends and fishbowls?? My husband and I actually ended up there the night we met … a couple of dancing fools! (Man – seems like a lifetime ago!) Well, actually I guess in a way it was. But just because we don’t hit the bars anymore, doesn’t mean the dancing has to end. Enter “Dance Party!” a classic Friday night for the Spiva family.
We started this tradition back when Jake was first born … we’ve never been ones to get a babysitter “just to go out” (although I’m trying to institute a little more of that lately). So “date night” often meant cooking a yummy meal, enjoying a good bottle of wine, listening to great music and before you knew it, we were up and dancing. We’d pull Jake into it and he would have a BLAST! Now he asks to have Dance Party almost weekly. And because we are Dancing with the Stars fanatics, he now tries to throw in all these fancy moves – too funny! We try and keep the music selection based on mom and dad favs, but occasionally throw in some kids tunes. (By the way, is it bad that a 5-year old knows all the words to Katy Perry??) The baby even loves dance party and giggles her way through all the boppin’ up and down. And aside from being a fun, family bonding experience, it’s also a really good workout! Not to mention, it’s FREE – another bonus as we sit in this recession.
Here’s all you need to create your own Dance Party:
* Clear out a large area in your family room
* Set your iPod to your favorite tunes
* Grab the whole family
* Turn the music up nice and loud (who cares if the neighbors can here you!)
* And start dancing!!!
Adult beverages certainly welcome and typically present (for mom and dad only, of course)
So kick off your shoes, do a little dance, have a little fun, and get down tonight with your own Dance Party!! Let us know how it goes … or better yet, share some of your FUN family traditions!

Love this idea and I do miss the fishbowls! My hubby and I love to dance and I can’t think of a better way to pass that on to our son. Thanks for the tip!!
What a great idea!
We are with you! My two year old has never heard of the wiggles (thank the lord, trying to keep it that way) but can sing his way through all the classic rap from Mommy & Daddy's late night frat party days!
I'm proud to say I was a witness to the Have a Nice Day dance-off that resulted in Matt & Tracy being forever in love:-)We also do dance party (must have been the fish bowl influence!) – my boys like the techno rave tunes on satellite. It is the funniest thing to see them busting out their best moves!
Tracy & Jen, I have a feeling we probably danced side by side at some point at Have A Nice Day Cafe! I spent every weekend of my after-college days on that stage! Or at The Hut! Fun times, fun times. My kids love to dance, too, and Jake has some sweet new break-dancing moves he has perfected. The last time I tried to show them how mommy does the worm I think I threw my back out. 🙂
A disco ball (can be purchased at Sweet and Sassy or Learning Express) completes the effect!
Even though it was not from my generation, I use to dance my kids around the changing table to “In the Mood”! They are all adults now and still think I’m nuts!
