From Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
Dec. 23 deadline for new students to enroll
Rising kindergarteners and new students must enroll by 5 p.m. Dec. 23 to be eligible for first magnet lottery.
Families of rising kindergarteners and older children who will be new to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools must enroll by 5 p.m. tomorrow, Dec. 23, to be eligible for the first magnet lottery for the 2009-2010 school year. Families may download and print instructions and forms from the CMS Web site and bring the documents to the Family Application Center, 700 Marsh Road. The Family Application Center is open today, Monday, Dec. 22 until 5 p.m. and tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec. 23 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Dec. 23 deadline applies to families with children who will begin kindergarten in the 2009-2010 school year and want to apply for a magnet program. Families who plan to send their child to their assigned home school do not have to register by Dec. 23, but are encouraged to enroll as soon as possible. The deadline also applies to students who are currently enrolled in other schools and plan to enter CMS in the 2009-2010 school year.
“The student-assignment lottery process is all done online,” said Scott McCully, executive director of student placement. “Families who are enrolled by the Dec. 23 deadline will receive a personalized magnet-lottery instruction sheet in the mail during the first week of January.”
The first magnet lottery for the 2009-2010 school year will run from Jan. 9 through Feb. 9, 2009. Families may learn more about the district’s magnet programs during a magnet fair at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology on Jan. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The second magnet lottery and open-seat lottery will begin March 16.

We just did this today. FYI on the original birth certificate … they don’t actually keep the original, they just need to see it and they will make a copy for their records. So if you’re worried about giving up your only original, you don’t have to!
