Welcome to the end of May and the beginning of what I see as the official beginning of summer – the arrival of June. It seems to be one of the slower weekends in terms of activities. Many of the things that are going on we have posted about previously, so be sure to check out Discovery Place, Charlotte Museum of History and Imaginon.
There are two things that are going on this weekend that I would like to highlight. The first is something that is near and dear to Charlotte Smarty Pants’ hearts. Several readers have emailed to let us know about Kris Lawing. He is a 36-year-old husband to Renee and dad to six year old Grant, and was recently diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. He has begun his battle with this horrible disease and his friends and family are having a yard sale this weekend at Butler High School in Matthews to help raise money for his family. Kris is a small business owner in the Matthews/Mint Hill/Indian Trail area and is the sole financial support for his family. If you are out on Saturday, stop by. You can help Kris and his family and you may just find a great deal as well. You can find out more by going to his website at http://www.krislawing.com/. Let’s keep Kris and his family in our prayers as they fight this cancer.
The second cool activity is the spraygrounds are OPEN all over Charlotte!! Charlotte Mecklenburg Parks & Rec. opened five of their spraygrounds over the Memorial Day Holiday. Just in time for preschool to be getting out and giving all of us a great oprion for our kids. The spraygrounds are great, they have splash areas, waterspouts and kids of all ages love them. They will be open seven days a week, 10am-8pm. Spraygrounds are FREE to the public. They are very family friendly and are a great place to meet for playdates or to have a fun family picnic. The parks that have spraygrounds are:

We took my son to a “sprayground” in birkdale village this past weekend. Birkdale Village is basically an outdoor mall in Huntersville. It was really nice, they have a cold stone creamery there and a Brixx pizza. http://www.birkdalevillage.net/events.htm
Wow How fun! I live in the mountains and I wish they had these here!
