Looking for the right pediatrician? You should probably start looking at pediatricians just after your first trimester and begin the interviewing process. Babycenter has a good interview sheet that helps you walk through the process to find the right doctor. One thing to consider is distance from home or work. There will be many times when you’ll be rushing here and you don’t want to be too far. Also, make sure the practice isn’t too big. You probably don’t want a practice with more than six or so doctors. Otherwise, you’ll never see your primary doctor. Here are some links to pediatricians in Charlotte:
–Arboretum Pediatrics – – great staff. My fave is Dr. Jamie, definitely biased because he is our primary doctor. He is so incredible with the children. My girls actually get excited to see him, even though they know they are getting a shot. The twins are not so easily swayed. Must be a girl thing! I like his laid-back demeanor and approach to treatment options. My mom and mother-in-law skip out the door with lipstick on when they hear that we are off to see Dr. Jamie! I also like Dr. Dorsey and Dr. Sullivan – I guess I like them all and especially the nurses. One time, Catherine (nurse) stayed on the phone with me while I was driving to the ER. She could hear the fear in my voice and waited until I walked through the ER doors before she hung up. I was so impressed with how patient and soothing she was when I was so obviously crazy scared. It’s nice too because I feel like I know the entire staff pretty well there and they seem to know us. I guess with four little ones, you spend enough time in one place, and you become a celebrity!
–Eastover Pediatrics – Know lots of people who go here and love it. Great Center City location.
–Charlotte Pediatrics – They have three locations. This is a big practice but I’ve heard great things about them, particularly Dr. Shulstad and Dr. Richter, she seems super cool.
–Providence Pediatrics – This is the practice who Arboretum Pediatrics partners with for sick clinic on weekends. They are located in Ballantyne and Matthews. We’ve had to go there a few times and really liked the doctors.
–SouthPark Pediatrics – Located near Park Rd Shopping Center. Small practice with just two doctors, Jen B goes here and loves it.
This pretty much covers the pediatricians who I am familiar with. There are plenty more, especially in private practice, which unfortunately, I’m not privy to because my insurance is lame. But feel free to respond and I’ll add to the list. Carolinas Healthcare has an extensive list as does Presbyterian Healthcare. Your OB-GYN should also be able to provide you with some options.

We also go to Arboretum Pediatrics and love it. Both Dr. Williams and Paccico are very highly recommended. I agree that their nursing staff is great and will take their time with you on the phone.
We love Traci LaMothe at Ballantyne Pediatrics!
University Pediatrics is widely used in the University area. They are a CMC (Carolina’s Medical Center practice). We go to Southlake Pediatrics (also a CMC practice) near Birkdale (for those of you near Huntersville) and absolutley love them. They do a “get to know our practice.” event once a month so you can interview a couple doctors before your baby is born. They also have a lactation specialist on staff that saved my life when I started breastfeeding!!!!
We have had a great experience with Dr. Eichenbrenner at Elizabeth Pediatrics.
We use Charlotte Peds and love them! They are big, but for the most part I have not had an issue getting the doctor I want. Occasionally when we need a quick appt we might see whoever is available but have liked everyone we’ve had (except maybe 1 in the 3-1/2 years we’ve been going). The other great benefits are their hours – they have weekend appts – BOTH Sat and Sun – which is great if you’re a working mom! It’s first come, fist serve, but again, we’ve never had an issue with getting an appt when we need it. They also have 24-hr nurses available for those late night questions that pop up. And the on-site pharmacy is a life saver when you have a sick child and don’t want to have to wait in the forever line at Eckards! Dr. Baker is our favorite and he sounds a lot like your Dr. Jamie!
Eichenbrenner with Elizabeth Peds–he’s old enough to have good experience, but young enough to be with my child til he’s 18. He doesn’t jump to drug your child at the first sniffle, but will bring out the big guns when necessary.
Another vote for Dr Baker at Charlotte Peds! He is wonderful. Honestly we’ve liked all but 1 or 2 of the docs at Charlotte Peds.
We live in Lake Norman and cannot say enough wonderful things about Southlake Pediatrics as well. They will not give out antibiotics for just any reason, have sick and well waiting rooms (a MUST for kids), and have the best staff. We interviewed four offices and this place was, by far, the best one we met with.
Kids First Pediatrics in South Charlotte!!! All 3 doctors are amazing and after my son had surgery, they checked up on him (and us) daily- even though they were not responsible for the surgical post-op care. They spent a great deal of time discussing his condition with us, and helped us to find many opinions. We LOVE them!
We love Dr. Pridemore (and all of the other doctors) at Elizabeth Pediatrics.
We go to Dilworth Pediatrics and it’s awesome. THey are located right on East Blvd. in a new, very nice office (above Beaux Bellies). 3 full-time, 1 part-time docs. Great place, wonderful nurses, Dr. Catherine Olmsted is super.
We love Dr. Sullivan at Arboretum Pediatrics. She is wonderful with my daughter. The nurses there are fantastic!
Eastover Peds is the best. All the doctors and staff are wonderful, we see Dr. Giftos and he is great with my kids, kind and easy to talk to…but every time I call with a question or go in for a concern, I always feel so pleased with the care and concern they show for my kids and I. A++
We love Providence Pediatrics! We go to Anne Gessner, who is actually a nurse practitioner and (big bonus) a lactation consultant – she was a huge help when Mom was suffering repeated bouts of mastitis! We have also seen & loved Riley & Culpepper. Culpepper gets a bad rap, but I’ve never seen a doctor with better bedside manor for a baby – my son just loves him!
We also use University Peds and really like them. They have many Drs. to choose from so it is easry to find one that fits your personality – our favorites are Dr. Higgins, Dr. Gunther and Mary White – one of the nurse pract.
Being a native of Charlotte it seemed like an easy choice to go to Eastover (my husband and I both grew up there) but after being sent to the health department to stand in line for 4 hours to get my 10 month old her flu shot, we quickly realized we had made the wrong decision. The staff also treated me as though they could care less if we moved our daughter to another practice. We obviously don’t want to take our children to people who don’t care if we are there or not!!! We have since moved to Charlotte Ped’s and seen Dr. Shulstadt twice… he’s GREAT!
We have always liked the docs at Eastover Pediatrics but since they do not schedule flu shot appts and only offer clinics (which are impossible to get into since they only notify you via their website, which you would have to check every day several times a day to catch a clinic), we are moving to Charlotte Peds in 2008. I do not want to experience going to the health dept again for shots! I have also heard so many wonderful things about Dr. Baker at Clt Peds and Dr. Pridemore at Eliz Peds. However, my understanding is that Dr. Pridemore is not taking any new patients at this time.
I had to laugh as two of us were venting about Eastover Ped’s flu shot issues at the exact same moment! Glad to hear someone else is truly as frustrated as I am!
We have been going to Charlotte Peds. for almost 8 years. Dr. Almquist is our favorite. My kids love her and she knows everything about them. She is a very calming person and knows when to speak my language(ie.. mom chill out). We also see Shulstad, Richter and Shaffner. Love them all and when my son gets to puberty, I will be more than happy to turn him over to Shulstad. Quick note about Almquist, she has twin boys for you moms of multiples.
We go to Providence Pediatrics in Ballantyne and absolutely love it. We see Dr. Culpepper and adore him. He never seems rushed and spends plenty of time with us each time we are there. He has a great disposition and is wonderful with our 19 month old son. We’ve seen some of the other doctors for sick visits and have been very pleased with all of them. They also have a lactation specialist on staff who is wonderful as well. Highly recommend Providence Peds!
I LOVE Dr. Wilma Downing at Providence Peds in Ballantyne. When she found out I had my twins over Easter and she wasn’t on the rotation to see them, she called the attending physician to switch and came right over. Then she sat with me for two hours (two weeks later) to figure out how to help my little boy twin when he would not eat. SHE figured out it was the size of the nipple and went back to the hospital, got a preemie nipple and drove it to my house in SW Charlotte…20 minutes from her office. I can’t say enough wonderful things about her. It’s also helpful that she has two toddler boys so she can definately relate to what we all go through.
it’s great to see that there are so many wonderful doctors here in charlotte for our little ones! thanks for everyone’s comments!
We go to Charlotte Pediatrics as many have also mentioned. I take my older daughter to Dr. Baker and he is wonderful. However, a friend of mine also joined that practice since my older daughter was born and he is great too. His name is Dr. Charles Smoak and my newborn has been to see him.
We’ve had a wonderful experience with Dr. Walter Thomas at Matthews Children Clinic. He’s so thorough and is fabulous with the kids. Highly recommend.
I was really suprised by all the negative comments about getting a flu shot at the health dept. We go to Eastover Pedes as well, and they were all out of the flu shot for my 6 month old, so we called the health dept. and scheduled an appt. Because he is young, we had to go twice (2 doses), and had a wonderful experience each time. You go in, get a number, and go back to the vaccine clinic…the nurses are super sweet, and a big plus for me was that their flu shots were ALL thimerisol free. Maybe the clinics are a pain for folks, but if you make an appt., it’s super easy, and much faster than waiting in the Pedes office…and FREE!!
We love Dr Kocmond at Dilworth Pediatrics. He as a fantastic way with children (and neurotic parents). The practice is well run and efficient. The big bonus is that they are part of a call group with EVENING, WEEKEND and HOLIDAY HOURS! It has saved us a number of urgent care visits.
We go to South Charlotte Primary Care(Pediatrics), Dr. Glass. We love that we get to see our doctor each visit and have had a great experience. There are four doctors in the practice.
Dr. Glass at South Charlotte Primary Care will always hold a special place in our heart. He has been so kind to us and shows such compassion to our children. He never rushes you or acts as if any questions is silly.
I love Char. peds. I was really scared about going to them after we had a nightmare experience at the hospital with dr. almquist. She showed up in clothes my mom would wear to a bar (2 days in a row!) and refused to do the check up in my room! Other than her, everyone else has been wonderful. We see Dr. Richter and she is truly amazing!
I love Eastover! My son had a heart condition at birth and the doctors at Eastover took wonderful care of him, referred us to the right specialist and were there to answer questions ANYTIME! Also, the lacation consultants and nurse practiioners Jan & Judy are great. They really helpled me initiate breastfeeding absolutely made the difference in helping me stick with it. Also, they have appointments on Saturdays and Sundays for sick children.
We too LOVE Dr. Glass at S. Charlotte Primary Care- We have a 2 1/2 yr old who has been hospitalized and he has been amazing– we always see him and he spends plenty of time with us never rushing our visits. I am a nurse and feel strongly that he’s a wonderful physician.
I highly recommend Dr. Laramie Williams aka Laramie with Arboretum Peds. She started the practice and we started when she was solo. My son had an accident and when she found out we were in the ER, she called and demanded that she talk to me to see how I the mom was doing. She knew I was probably torn up. Some of you may not know but she use to do the health segment on wsoc tv 5:30p.m. news~ my kids use to love seeing her for the quick 5 mins .1 x week on the news. Very smart!
We go to Dilworth too. We love Dr. Kocmond – so true about being good with neurotic parents! He is great with my daughter and have great experience everytime. Dr. Ohmstead is also very good there.
As a physician in town, all of my colleagues and friends go to either Arboretum Peds (Sullivan is our fave but all are great), Elizabeth Peds (all first rate) or Charlotte Peds where I bring my daughter. Our primary doc is JODIE PROSSER (there is no better doc in town — smart, personable, empathetic and fun) although I also LOVE Amanda Moran, Stephanie Richter and Andy Schulstad although I could virtually list them all…..Hopefully no one would need them but a little shout out to Sanger Cardilogy Pediatrics — lifesavers, literally!
Ballantyne Pediatrics has a great team of doctors but the most of the staff members( front desk, nurses) are not too friendly; they seem unhappy to work there. They are not very professional – there is one very profound instance that I will never forget- It was time for my daughter to pick out a prize so she heads for the toy chest and the nurse stops her and tells her she can only choose a prize if she has had blood drawn or an injection- none of which my daughter had. The nurse opens a drawer and pulls out a syringe and as she is uncapping it she states “you can have a toy if I can give you one of these” My daughter takes sight of the needle and runs into my arms screaming. VERY PROFESSIONAL! I have had over 25 years of experience working with children and you must address the child you are treating like a person and understand that they have feelings just like an adult.

Thanks for the tips for finding a pediatrician. We need to find one for our newborn son, so this is great. I’ll be sure to find one that is either close to our or to my work. That’s a great idea.
