As the big Thanksgiving holiday approaches many of you are packing up for air travel on USAIR. I am providing a link to the policies for USAIR about traveling with kids. Basically, if the child is under 2 you can carry them on your lap or you can buy them a seat. If you buy a seat and they are under 2 you MUST have a car seat. You need to bring a birth certificate for a child under 2 (even for domestic travel), they may or may not ask for it but don’t get stuck without it! In fact, I would take on no matter what the age of your child just to be safe. If your child is over the age of 2 you are required to purchase a seat but you are not required to have a car seat. Claire has only been on one plane trip. It was not too bad, just bring plenty of small games and books and snacks! Stickers, crayons, new books and Play-doh worked best for us. Bring a pacifier or bottle if they still take one, for their ears when you take off and land.
Parking has changed quite a bit in the last year. The Charlotte-Douglas Airport website has good info on parking options and rates and even tells you “live” how the parking conditions are looking. be sure to log on right before you leave. Did you know the airport has more than 20,000 parking spaces? We even have curbside valet that costs $19 a day – might be worth it if you are travelling with a baby or toddler!

I wanted to let everyone know of the flying policies for flying with breast milk. I was worried about this when I was on vacation without my child yet still had to pump and bring the supply back with me. US Airways could not answers these questions, but I was finally able to talk with someone at TSA. You can bring it in a cooler and now you can bring through as much as you have to. Just make sure to claim it as you check in at the security screening. I have not had any trouble with it so far, but I always have a printed page off of the TSA website regarding Children with me. Just wanted you to know:)
Another great option for parking is use the curbside check in. I recently flew out of Charlotte on Usair and my 5 year old had fallen asleep on the way to the airport. I pulled up right in front of the outside counter, unloaded the 4 bags, checked them, checked in for my flight and off we went to park. All with my children within 4 feet of me. I would have never made it with a cranky 5 year old, a know-it-all 7 year old, 4 checked bags and 3 carry ons by myself. they do charge a $2 per bag fee now, plus tip. But, totally worth it in my eyes.
We flew home to Pittsburgh with our 9 mo old this past summer. We were worried about juggling a baby, a stroller, diaper bag, a purse, lugguage, etc…My husband had the smart idea–Fed Ex our “luggage.” We packed two boxes of clothes, toiletries, etc., and took them to Fed Ex Kinkos the day before our trip. They arrived at my parent’s home an hour before we arrived. All that we took on the plane was a diaper bag, a stroller and ourselves. So easy, and worth the $100 not to hassel with checking baggage and lugging it to and from the car!
Never leave home without emergency lollipops. A must on planes for pressure earaches, or mouth-corking when you realize that your child is about to comment on the heavily tatooed, cross-dressing or malodorous person in the seat next to you. (I keep them in my purse/computer bag for all-occasion mouth-corking.) And of course, don’t get on a plan without antibacterial hand products. And a portable DVD player.
