On Saturday, May 7, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) students across the county will host lemonade stands to “Squeeze the Digital Divide” in partnership with local digital inclusion nonprofit Eliminate the Digital Divide (E2D). Money raised at the lemonade stands will be used by E2D to ensure all CSM students have access to home-based technology like computers and affordable internet. Lemonade stands will be open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at all 109 CMS elementary schools. A list of lemonade stand locations will be available on http://www.e-2-d.org.
Eliminate the Digital Divide’s mission is close the academic achievement gap by providing all CMS students with educational technology like computers and internet, as well as technology skills training. Currently, more than 24,000 CMS families are in need of basic educational technology and training.
The nonprofit was founded four years ago by a CMS middle school student who saw that gaps in educational technology within the home were coinciding with expanding gaps in learning opportunities for fellow classmates.
