Thursday, May 31st, join Loaves & Fishes for “Raising Children Who Care; A conversation with Lois Brandt, award-winning author of Maddi’s Fridge.” This is an opportunity for parents and adults to learn how to talk to children about childhood hunger and poverty while instilling important lessons in friendship, empathy, and helping others.
In her colorful story book, Maddi’s Fridge, best friends Sofia and Maddi live in the same neighborhood, go to the same school, and play in the same park, but while Sofia’s fridge at home is full of nutritious food, the fridge in Maddi’s house is empty.
On Thursday, May 31st, Ms. Brandt will speak to parents and adults at a luncheon in Jubilee Hall at Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Rd. 11:30am-1:00pm. A limited number of copies of Maddi’s Fridge will be available for purchase. Tickets are $10 Title Sponsor of the event is Publix Super Markets.
Ms. Brandt’s visit comes at a crucial time of year for raising awareness of childhood hunger. Each year, Loaves & Fishes sees a 20% increase in the number of families fed during the summer months. Families who depend on free and reduced breakfast and lunch during the school year, face food insecurity throughout the long summer months. Last year, Loaves & Fishes fed over 75,000 people in Mecklenburg Co. 46% were children.
