Smarty Alert: The JMSD Spring Company Showcase is this FRIDAY!

JMSD 2017 Recital

Smarties, it’s our favorite time of year – it’s spring recital time for all of our tiny dancers! Since my girls were little {and before they were dancers}, we have always made the Jami Masters School of Dance (JMSD) Friday night Company Showcase a Girls Night Out Plym tradition!

This year, my daughter will be in her 2nd year in JMSD Jr Company and I can’t wait to see her dance! She has been taking dance at JMSD since she was four years old, she’s now 14. She has loved every minute of it and so have we! We have had so much fun watching her grow into a beautiful young dancer, and we can thank Jami and her talented team for that. Let’s not forget, Smarty Charlotte voted JMSD “Best Dance Studio” in the 2016 Smarty Awards, very well-deserving! Read More →

Fitness Friday: Flywheel Sports Teen Program

Flywheel Smarty Teens

As school spring sports are wrapping up and summer is just beginning, it’s the perfect time for your teens to try new workouts. Well Smarties, we have just the workout for your athletic teenagers – Flywheel and FlyBarre Charlotte!

Whether your teen is a competitive athlete or just looking for something to get him/her in shape, Flywheel has something for everyone. Flywheel is the perfect supplement for your teen’s sports workouts, for boys and girls alike. I mean if Cam, Greg & Luke can hang here in their off season (just spotted last week:-), then you know this is the best kick-booty workout in the QC!

Keeping your teens busy is important, it keeps them out of trouble. There is nothing better than an intense cycle class or even better, a double with cycle and barre, followed by a juice from Juice Bar next door on a Friday night (or Leroy Fox if they are really hungry)! Best part, they can invite all of their friends to join the competition.

My teen has been loving Fly for a few months now and she absolutely loves the high energy workouts, the overall vibe of the studio, the FlyGear (she wears Fly’s AHH-Mazing leggings out pretty much every Friday night!) and best of all, I love the teen discount rates. Here’s what they look like. Read More →

Smarty Social Media Parenting Series: What you need to know about Snapchat

Smarties, you’ll want to bookmark this as part of our popular Social Media Parenting Series. Do you feel like keeping up with your kids’ social media is a full time job? You’re not alone. Parents today have it hard. We’re all playing catch up with the social media world and often feel overwhelmed by how to parent through it. As part of our commitment to the Charlotte parenting community, CSP is dedicated to creating an ongoing conversation between parents, educators, healthcare providers and law enforcement about social media and our children. Today we are hosting the first ever Town Hall on Social Media Parenting and we have an amazing panel of local experts. We plan to continue this conversation weekly on CSP and will host the 2nd Town Hall in the fall. Email us here if you have any topics or specific questions you’d like us to research. Remember, we’re all in this parenting gig together. #ittakesavillage

Today I’m talking about SnapChat. For those of you not familiar, Snapchat is a super popular app on the teen scene where a person can send photos and videos (aka, snaps) to their friends. These snaps can then be viewed for up to 10 seconds before they disappear. Kind of like magic for teens. In addition, Snapchat updates the app often with new colorful filters, geofilters, face-swapping effects, messaging, videos, live stories and more – it’s no wonder teens love it.

Snapchat can actually be a fun app for people of all ages. But due to the inherent nature of the app with photos “disappearing,” it’s important to teach your kids the golden rule of social media – there is no delete button. This is something that we will have to remind them ALL.THE.TIME. From the early days of devices well into the high school years, they just cannot grasp the concept that everything they do from texts, to instagram, to snaps, to VSCO is all part of their digital tattoo for ever and ever. For them, Snapchat is an in-the-moment lens that allows them to be carefree and sometimes take risks that they wouldn’t normally take in person. This is where Snapchat gets dicey. Read More →

Smarty Spotlight: Caroline Calouche

Caroline Calouche and tankina

Aerial dance is one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring styles to watch as it is truly an artistic interpretation of grace, strength and gravity-defying creativity. We are so lucky to have an amazing artist on the pulse of the aerial dance scene here in Charlotte, Caroline Calouche.

Caroline founded Charlotte’s only aerial and contemporary dance company and school, Caroline Calouche & Co (CC&Co.), a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring people of diverse backgrounds to explore beyond their boundaries through performance and education. Her vision is to create educational opportunities for people to experience the world from a unique and artistic perspective, which will enrich their lives and the lives of those around them.

Straight from her bio because this is just beyond impressive:
Caroline Calouche has taught contemporary dance, Pilates, Gyrokinesis and ballet at UNC Charlotte, Winthrop University, The Belmont School of Ballet, Gaston Dance Theatre and The School of North Carolina Dance Theatre. Her dance and fitness teaching background has allowed her to become a sought after aerial dance instructor. Not only has Caroline developed a safe method and syllabus of teaching Aerial Silk, Sling, Trapeze, Lyra, Corde Lisse and Spanish Web, she is able to teach students how to incorporate floor work with their apparatus to seamlessly move from the ground up and back again.

I’m excited for Smarty Charlotte to get to know Caroline through her productions, her camps, her summer intensives and also her super fun recos of her favorite things all over Charlotte.

Meet the one and only, Caroline Calouche! Read More →

Smarty Pick for Best Boys Birthday Party in the QC: Knockerball Charlotte

Knockerball: The Ultimate Party Experience

I’m always stumped when it comes to a good boys birthday party venue. I get asked time and time again, “what are your favorite birthday party spots?” Until my twins’ 11th birthday party last month, I’ve never really had a good, solid reco for a birthday boy. And then we hosted a Knockerball party, which was hands down, the best boys birthday party we’ve ever hosted. Here’s why.

My boys’ birthday is on Valentine’s Day, kind of a lame date for a boy birthday. Valentine’s Day is all about girly things like pink hearts and sending love notes to your Valentine crush. If you ask any boy about stuff like that, they’d blush and want to throw up. It’s also a terrible time of year for weather which means no outside venues. We can’t just set up a game of flag football, throw some Gatorades in a cooler and send the winning team home with bragging rights. Our birthday parties need to be well thought out and perfectly executed. Or we run the risk of my boys and their buds literally bouncing off the walls. Enter Knockerball Charlotte, the perfect activity inside or out where kids can do just that and have a blast while doing it.

Knockerball is a giant inflatable sphere with handles and adjustable straps on the inside. Knockerballs allow you to bump and crash into your friends with no pain experienced at all. Organizing a game of KnockerSoccer is super fun, although people often forget about the soccer ball and find themselves knocking each other down in pure chaos. The only pain you’ll experience will be from laughing too hard!

Meet the newest member of CSP, Mary Kate Watkins!

MK Watkins

I live for Smarty Mom Saturdays, especially when we have some new pink & green blood. Mary Katherine Watkins (Mary Kate or MK, totally interchangeable:-) has had pink & green running through her veins long before she ever even knew it. She is an investigative researcher and tester-outer by nature and is constantly looking for a good story to share. This has much to do with her amazing upbringing, which I’ll let MK tell you about in just a second. Let’s just say she was brought up by “good people” and has always surrounded herself with people of the like. Her siblings are straight out of a Hollywood movie, pretty sure “This is Us” stole their ideas from MK’s Charlotte family.

I’m also certain it was serendipity that MK joined Team CSP. Little did I know it at the time, but I befriended her younger sister, Anne, when I was a brand new mom years ago. Anne was just starting her career at Nordstrom SouthPark, and I starting my new mommy career. I was also on the brink of the birth of Smarty Pants. As you can imagine, with four kids in tow and not a lot of shopping options for the littles, I spent ALOT of time in the Nordstrom Kids department, checking out products and trends in kids stuff. Anne and I quickly realized we had so much in common even though were years apart in age. She was a St. Gabriel Catholic School graduate. My kids were just starting out there. She was an identical twin, I have a set of identical twins. She comes from “good people” and I do as well. I LOVED Anne the minute I met her. Fast forward 10 years and Anne recommended her sister for a writing position at CSP.

When I first reached out to MK, we were trying to arrange a coffee meet-up. She committed to a date at first and quickly texted back saying that she didn’t realize her kids were off school that day. It was her description of why they were off that day that caught my attention. She said “shoot, my kids aren’t in school that day, feels like they are never in frickin’ school.” I knew right then MK was one of “Us.” She has a quick wit, writes exactly how she talks and can fly by the seat of her pants. Not to mention, she also has an amazing story, family and CSP angle to share – you’re going to absolutely adore MK! I know we do! Read More →
