Smarty Trunk Show @ the Buttercup: MADE in the Deep South 12/14-12/17

Made in the Deep South Brooch

As featured in our Smarty Favorite Things Giveaway, we bring you a super Smarty trunk show at the Buttercup featuring MADE in the Deep South that you’re not going to want to miss! (P.S. Today is your LAST day to enter that amazing fab-fest!). The MADE in the Deep South trunk show will be at the Buttercup today through December 17th. Head over asap and give your hubbies some serious winks so he knows exactly what to put under your tree this year!

On MADE in the Deep South:

MADE in the Deep South jewelry line was created with the idea of making “one-of-a-kind” pieces for women that strive to express their own personal style. We start with vintage and antique pieces that are collected all over the world, some dating back to the 1800s. The vintage pieces are then deconstructed, mixed with other pieces and other materials to create “new,” stand-out jewelry. Every MADE piece is unique and varies in style depending upon the piece itself, and the era it came from. They all have their own history and story to tell. Each MADE piece is adorned with a “story card” that provides its very own biography.

We have been in business 7 years now (can’t believe it)! It all started by accident when I found something bright and shiny in an antique store over Thanksgiving holiday. I was wearing a braided leather cuff at the time and tied the piece on with Kitchen twine! People began stopping me to ask where I bought it and so I sat down to truly figure out how to properly construct them, and the rest is history! I did my first art show with a measly 26 cuffs and in walked my first retailer asking to sell them in her boutique. I expanded into necklaces within 6 months and continuously strive to expand and evolve the line. My goal is to pass on a piece of history with these vintage pieces and make one of a kind jewelry that truly expresses each woman’s personal style. I LOVE the hunt of finding the vintage pieces and creating something “new” with them. When I get the vintage pieces I always wonder – where has each piece been? What has it witnessed and been a part of in the past? How did it’s original owner cherish it and take pride in wearing it? I love knowing I am breathing a new life into them and passing on the history they have already acquired.

I hope you enjoy our special Charlotte trunk show! Fondly, Michela of MADE in the Deep South Read More →

One of my favorite holiday performances of the year…Jami Masters School of Dance presents Happy Holidays!

jmsdhappyholidaysreindeer

OK, I’m a little biased, my daughter is in it this year, and yes, I’m beaming with pride, as always:-) BUT, JMSD Happy Holidays has always been one of my favorite holiday shows for years. Before my girls were into dance, we made it our tradition to see all of the Nutcracker and holiday performances during the holiday season. We make it a Girls Night Out with dinner and a show every weekend in December. My girls live for this tradition now and we’re thrilled that it’s a JMSD Happy Holidays year!

Every other year, Jami Masters School of Dance puts on an AMAZING production called Happy Holidays. This is a beautiful, fun and sweet performance with dancers ranging from age 3 all the way up to seniors in high school and performing a variety of dances. Happy Holidays is produced and choreographed by professionals – this is NOT your typical recital performance, this is the real deal perfect for the season. You will leave in tears of joy!

On Happy Holidays from JMSD:

Happy Holidays is an original dance production that delights and captures the hearts of audiences of all ages. Set to your favorite holiday music and featuring classical ballet, tap, jazz, and modern dance, Happy Holidays offers family-friendly holiday entertainment.

Come and be a part of Angel’s earthly journey as she is sent to find the true meaning of the holiday. Travel with her through the Winter Wonderland, a Sweet Bakeshop, and the Magical Toyshop, as she discovers the gifts of hope, love, peace, faith, forgiveness and joy. Share the gift of dance with your family and friends and rediscover the true meaning of the holidays at Happy Holidays. Read More →

Smarty Alert: Beverly’s Gourmet Foods Hosting Frozen Food Sale TOMORROW, 11/16!

Mecklenburg County Market

Y’all, this is a Smarty Alert for sure! Beverly’s Gourmet Foods is hosting their big frozen food sale tomorrow! Read on and get in line at 9:45am so you can get your pick of the loot at 50% off! Read on!

About Beverly’s Gourmet Foods:

A piece of Charlotte’s farmers market history resides in the Mecklenburg County Market near uptown. Beverly McLaughlin and three generations of her Charlotte family have been running this farmers market since the 1920s. I have been buying my produce from Beverly for the last decade. Her heirloom tomatoes are the juiciest and best tomatoes that I’ve ever bought, and that says alot coming from this Florida girl who grew up on the best tomatoes on the planet.

My true life changing moment was when I discovered Beverly’s Gourmet Foods. Beverly and her culinary team cook recipes rooted deep in her family and every single one is delicious. I feel like I have my own personal vegetarian chef! As a busy mama of four very active kids, I never have time to slow down, much less cook a healthy meal, even in the summer. My kids love Beverly’s foods as much as I do. Our favorites are the planet burgers, any and all soups, quiches, breakfast casseroles, salad dressings, pimento cheese – well, I can honestly say all of it! So, here’s the good part. And I’ll be honest, I’ve been hesitant to share this with Smarty Charlotte because it’s one of Charlotte’s best kept secrets. Read More →

Smarty Event: Flashes of Hope Give a Mini Session, Get a Mini Session this Sunday at Freedom Park!

Flashes of Hope CSP

One of my favorite aspects of my work at CSP is getting connected with amazing people in our community who are doing wonderful things. Flashes of Hope is an example of just that. Flashes of Hope Charlotte is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating powerful, uplifting portraits of children fighting cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. It’s an army of professional photographers, make-up artists and hair stylists with a huge heart. We couldn’t be more proud to highlight an event that Smarty Charlotte needs to hear about. It’s this weekend. I’ll let you hear all about it straight from our friends at Flashes of Hope. We certainly hope you’ll be inspired to get involved. Read More →

Smarty Giveaway: #GoNative

Native Sample Pack

I have been on the hunt for a good natural deodorant for years. When a gal pal of mine was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma a few years ago, she told me the first thing she ditched was her aluminum deodorant/antiperspirant. Her path to reducing the toxins she was exposed to inspired me to do the same. It makes total sense – we are putting metal in our pores to clog them right next to our lymph nodes and breasts multiple times a day. There is no argument that the more natural you go with your products, the healthier you will be in the long run. But finding an all-natural deodorant that actually worked proved to be more challenging than I anticipated.

What really made me do a hard stop and think about deodorant was when my girls started wearing it recently. They begged for a new aerosol spray brand that had scents similar to a Bath & Body Works collection – sounds yummy, right? Not so much. This meant that they would not only clog their pores with metals, now they would also be inhaling the toxic spray on a daily basis. It was game on to find a better alternative for my family. Here’s when Native deodorant entered my life – I fell hard for the Coconut & Vanilla scent and my girls did too. Read More →

Smarty Mom: Liz Khodak

Smarty Mom Liz Khodak

I love a fellow Smarty Mama of twins. Once you become part of the twin mom tribe, you instantly become a very resourceful person. Whether it’s scouting out gear that actually works like you need it to, or finding the best babysitter, or best consignment sale (plug here for the CMOMS sale – BEST in the QC, mark your calendars for the winter one in January!!) or best activities for babies and toddlers – twin moms figure this out as soon as they find out they are pregnant. We are tester-outers, researchers, information seekers and we’re not afraid to take our babes in tow to anywhere and everywhere this city has to offer. This is exactly what Liz Khodak embraces.

Liz entered the CSP team by storm, as you would expect a twin mom to do, with several blogs ready to share right out of the gate. She came on so fast, that I am just now getting to her Smarty interview a month later and several “Liz” blogs in (also typical of a seasoned twin mom who just runs out of time in every single day:-). Liz is exploring this city through the eyes of a new mama and a new resident of the QC – so you can bet she’s going to find the best stuff ever! We adore Liz and love watching her adorable girls through her lens. And we know you will too.

Smarties, meet Liz Khodak, the newest member of our Smarty family!

Liz’s Smarty Mom Stats:
