I just went to the Tailgate Farmers Market off of Camden on Tuesday afternoon and it was great! It appears to be a bit on the small side when you first see it, but the quality is spectacular and it turns out there are TONS of goodies to take home. I encourage ALL of you to go check it out.
There are some wonderful people promoting healthy, LOCAL and ORGANIC products. We really need to support our local farmers, artists and entrepreneurs. I adored this market. I have been to some other farmer’s markets in town and they have minimal local produce and mostly not organic. Now buying local is great even if it’s not organic. But if you can do both, than what is better than that? I have seen all kinds of fruit in some markets from all over the world and the problem with that is, first of all, I can go to Harris Teeter and buy stuff from South America. Secondly, you have to think of all the fuel used and pollution created to transport these items all over the world. Let’s all make an effort to eat local this summer and enjoy the hard work these men and women endure to bring these delightful items to the market. It’s really amazing to see the love and dedication they have put into what they do! I have featured a few of the vendors that I was able to speak with and buy some locally made produce, meat and products. First is Amy Foster with one of her adorable boys! She represents Gilcrest Natural Farm from Iron Station, NC. They have wonderful naturally raised beef, pastured chicken and free range eggs. Next is N Thyme Farm. The strawberries were AMAZING! Probably not available anymore since it’s late in season, but I bet he still has some great blackberries! So sweet and organic! Love it. They have a variety of produce and the owner is a hoot. He gave the boys their pick of berries to try out and of course they devoured them. Next to N Thyme, was Daddy’s Girl Dairy. They have great spreadable cheese for fruit and crackers. Their flavors range anything from peanut butter to Italian herb and are 98 % organic. I spoke to Catherine Alston from Quench Essentials and she has fabulous handcrafted all natural soaps, laundry detergent and glycerin sticks for stain removal. I bought some of the sticks since she says they remove just about everything but ink? Anyways, the stick has worked really well for me. I will also try the laundry detergent next time and see if it compares to my favorite Charlie’s soap. Down Home Baking Company was there with their made from scratch baked goods and no preservatives. Yummy! There were a few local artists, massage therapists and much more. To see a list of vendors and more information, go to www.charlottetailgatemarket.com.
They are open on Tuesday and Saturday. Go check it out and support local! I will hopefully head to the Matthews Farmer’s Market next since I hear it is also a gem. There are many local and organic vendors there as well. I would love to hear if anyone has been to the Davidson Farmer’s Market. Please comment on any items or local produce you recommend around town!

thanks for the review – I’ve heard of this one but hadn’t made the effort to get there yet. Sounds like it is definitely worth the energy to break the old routine. We usually hit up Kings Drive – mainly to save off the Teeter prices and to catch a few local items. But more local would be great! It really does taste better. Plus you gotta love helping out the little guys.
I live in Davidson and have checked out the Davidson Farmer’s Market almost every Saturday. The produce is great, and the line is always really long at the fresh flower vendor. Also, a couple of farmers sell organic chicken and fresh pork products…..these sell out fast. Live music is there beginning at 10am, and the local coffee shop is next door…perfect for early Saturday mornings! A playground is nearby where the kids can play.
where is the davidson farmers market located?
Thanks for the update on the Davidson Farmer’s Market! I will definitely head up that way. In response to the last comment, here is the location. The DFM is located between Main and Jackson Streets in downtown Davidson next to Town Hall – just minutes off Interstate I-77 and exit 30 in the Lake Norman area. You can pull up a map on the website. http://www.davidsonfarmersmarket.org/
