Brooke Brown has talent. Raw talent. Unbelievably raw talent. I had the privilege of meeting Brooke through preschool and then was introduced several times over from six degrees of separation from any mom in Charlotte. That’s just how we Charlotteans roll! We asked Brooke to take on the GYNORMOUS task of photographing the entire Smarty team and all of our chicken littles. Now that is no small feat, any rookie photographer would get eaten for breakfast! But not Brooke, she took charge of this project immediately and put her fresh, creative ideas to action. Brooke didn’t just photograph us – she created us, I could even go so far as to say that she reinvented us, she’s just that good. The only guidance we provided was the location – that super cool Charlotte directional sign at The Green uptown. Brooke took this and ran with it. She showed up with an assistant, this was an incredible touch, especially when we saw that it was Smarty Mom, Anne Willette, who has written for us many times! Brooke’s personality is mesmerizing and engaging, each child was immediately smitten, which is 99% of the battle with any children’s photo session. This genius team had every trick in their bags, including pink & green Smarty pinwheels for the children to make a long session seem light and whimsical.
Smarties, I’m honored to introduce the ever so talented Brooke Brown, Photography Diva, Super Mom of 3 and the hottest ticket in town on the photography circuit. You’ll see why when you check out the colorful memories splattered all over our site.
Let’s get to know Brooke!

How did you decide to take the jump into mompreneurism and land as a photographer?
My journey has been a long one (and at the same time I feel like it has only just begun). I’ve always loved taking pictures. Once my boys were born, I was always frustrated that I was ‘missing the shot’ with my tiny point-and-shoot — so I hijacked my husband’s digital SLR camera. I loved that I was ‘getting the shot’ but I hated most of the pictures. Some were cute, but I wanted many of them to be better. Much better. I eventually took a class and learned how to use the camera’s manual settings. That class changed everything. I had control over the camera. I could take a photo, see how it turned out, and then adjust my settings to make it better. I practiced — and practiced — and practiced. Over several months I took thousands of photos of my kids. And don’t get me started on the countless videos I watched and tutorials I read. I was determined to take better photos.
On a parallel path, my kids were spending more time at school/preschool and I started feeling like I had extra time to give. I have this stamp on my heart ‘to give love and serve others’ and I was trying to figure out the best way to do that. The thought occurred to me to give with my photography — but the more I researched, the more I realized that to be trusted to give, I first had to establish myself as a professional. That thought was scary: me, with a photography business?! I let it float around in my mind for awhile (a long while). During that time, my swim coach and power hour instructor asked me to photograph her YMCA class and her rehearsal dinner. I was nervous — and I ended up loving it.
Soon after a good friend asked if I would take Christmas card photos for her family and some of her friends’ families. Within weeks, Suzanne had organized my first 20 professional shoots and my business has not stopped since. Talk about a jumpstart!
Overall, this business has been such a blessing to me. I have so much fun helping families capture their lives. And I love having a platform to impact others, like my “Capturing Love, Sharing Love” mini-sessions this weekend. (I’m so excited about them!)
What is your best piece of advice on photo day?
The hard part is done!
– Your family carved out time for the session.
– Everyone got haircuts, maybe even some highlights.
– You all showered (a feat in itself).
– Cute outfits were selected, pressed and are now on.
– You laid out all the expectations (and maybe some big-deal bribes) in the car ride over to the session (yes, everyone does it).
Once you step foot onto your session location, ENJOY it! Play with your kids. Wink at your hub. Be silly! Get yourself in that mode where you can flash that “totally you” smile with your head thrown back/to the side, your eyes squinty and all your teeth showing. That’s the smile that comes out when you’re the happiest. That’s the smile that you want captured.
P.S. Take yourself off the hook if your kids aren’t as excited to be there as you are. Its totally normal. No need to be embarrassed. No need to scold your kids. Just give the photographer some time to get them there. They will!
What is your biggest challenge in balancing it “all”?
The fact that sleep is necessary! A couple of weeks ago I tried to make it on 4-5 hours of sleep a night for 5+ nights in a row. Its official: that method doesn’t work. I ended up ridiculously sick – which completely cut into family/work/friends/school. 🙂 I’m currently trying to figure out the right amount of busy to be (how many sessions to book each week/each month). Once I have this figured out, I should be closer to balancing at least a few things.
What piece of advice can you share with other moms considering starting their own business?
If you have a passion and are toying with launching a business, do it! Its ok to start small — and its ok to practice on your friends, neighbors, anyone that you can grab. Its a win-win for both of you!
Biggest celeb crush?
Mark Wahlberg {sigh}
Favorite TV show?
I love to curl up on the couch with my hub while he flips through the DVR. I usually just listen to shows while I edit photos — except for Modern Family & Parenthood. For those two, I grab my hot tea, sit back and laugh/cry.
Favorite place to score kids clothes and shoes?
We usually keep it simple & head to the Gap and Old Navy. My guys live in character t-shirts and jersey shorts. I tried to fight it years ago, but the reality is, comfort rules in our house. We head to Nordstrom twice a year for shoes: one pair of sneaks, one pair of crocs. Works for school, church and everything in between. High style in the Brown house.
Favorite place to take the whole fam to dinner?
Big Daddy’s. Corn hole outside while you wait and great beer selection/yummy food (LOVE their black bean burger on a salad) when you get inside, makes it the perfect family spot for us.
Best book you’ve read lately?
Crazy Love by Francis Chan. I was hooked in the Preface, “I believe He wants us to love others so much that we go to extremes to help them. I believe He wants us to be known for giving – of our time, our money, and our abilities…”
Favorite movie?
Meet the Parents. I love movies but pretty much forget them as soon as I’m done watching. Somehow with Meet the Parents, even thinking about it makes me laugh.
Funniest thing your kids have ever said to you?
– I told my son if he ‘finished his milk, he could join the Batman Club!’ He responded confidently with, “that’s ok. I’ll just take one sip and join the Spiderman Club, instead. (mr. independent)
– When my son started school, I put tissues in his bag. His response: “No thanks. If I need to wipe my nose I’ll use my arm. OR, I could pick out my boogie and then roll it between my hands into a ball and then throw it.” (gross)
– To get my son to stop crying once, I pretended that I was crying too. He responded by saying, “Mommy, you can’t cry! You can’t cry because you don’t LOVE to cry the way I LOVE to cry.” (true)
– When one of my guys was 3, he pulled his pants down, pushed his privates backwards behind his legs and said, “look Mom! I have a tail, just like Bodie.” (our dog/huh)
Best birthday party you’ve attended/hosted?
Anything in my or someone else’s backyard. Whether its tricked-out Martha-style or just juice boxes and goldfish, there is something magical to me about celebrating with a child (or adult!) and their favorite friends in their own space. I love it.
Favorite date night spot?
Every once in awhile I vote Barrington’s. Every other time I vote for chilling out at Dean & Deluca (and maybe catching a movie). Its close — so I can be eating awesome food within moments of leaving my house (total plus). Its low key (based on the mood I can go for super-cute or super-casual). I literally unwind the second I walk in. Really, really love it there.
Minivan or SUV?
I LOVE my minivan! I can jump in without a ladder (I’m super short). I can stash my stuff in the under-the-floor compartment (perfect at the Y or anywhere I don’t want to lug it). I can slide the doors open (my guys would be dinging cars around town if we had regular doors). I can look like a total rock star (ok, not really….but I can pretend my wheels are that cool).
Favorite phone app?
I seriously come up short here. I have no apps except for Angry Birds for my boys. I also have an empty ipod from last Mother’s Day. I’d much prefer everything to come pre-loaded! 🙂
Favorite CSP blog?
I love so many but two from Krista stand out: The Power of Cream of Mushroom Soup (I sobbed) & And Then There Were Four (I laughed out loud).
I could not live without my…
Faith, first and foremost. Close second: my amazing husband/family, girlfriends, iphone (just keeping it real :))

Thank you Charlotte Smarty Pants! I am honored, in awe and teary over the introduction you gave me. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Another gigantic thank you to Hope Bray – our family photographer for years – who eagerly answered every question I’ve had along the way. Hope has supported me and believed in me wholeheartedly and her friendship is truly a blessing to me.
Great article Brooke! What everyone else should know is…your crazy BIG talent matches your crazy BIG tender heart. Your generosity has truly left me speechless.
Thank you for blessing me, my family and our new son.
So very proud of your venture to use your talents!
Much love-
Brooke is such a wonderfully fabulous person!! She is one of those people who has found what she’s supposed to do in life, and her photography subjects are lucky for that. I loved reading her profile — especially learning some new stories about her cute boys. Hysterical!!
I see all of the proceeding dates are the 14th. I just opened up and thought that i would be using a different date. Lo and behold, I am writing (you guessed it) on the 14th. How did that happen? I’m usually behind the times. But i am happy to congratulate you on that great article introducing you to the community. The only trouble with that, Brooke, is that it is taking you away from “us”. We were spoiled in getting lots and lots of shots all the time. Now I see we were being usefull as”practice”. So we can take some credit. Love you and am proud of you !
brooke has a huge heart and an incredible energy, both of which she brings to her faith, family, friends, and photography. i feel fortunate to count her as a friend, and as my family photographer. 🙂
So happy to see Brook as a Smarty Mom!! She’s the smartiest!!
Brooke Brown has the biggest heart of anyone I know! Her energy and laughter is really contagious and her photography is amazing. Her photography is an imprint of her heart, her love for people and her faith. Love her!
Jen, your intro couldn’t be more perfect. Brooke just has the killer combo of amazing photography talent and having that certain way about her that makes grown ups and kids alike feel so comfortable. Brooke, loved reading all of your different tidbits. Didn’t know you first borrowed Mike’s DSLR! And these quotes are just too much. Holla for the Minivan and Mark Wahlberg (one of mine too ;)) and appreciate what you said about having a hard to time balancing and getting sleep. Makes sense…you are a busy mom! Love that your older guys are wearing their Karate stuff in your pic-so authentic ;)! Love being friends with this smarty mom!!
(ps thanks for the shout out!…it was a total privilege to be able to see both this fab photographer and the Smarty Team in action!)
Brooke, so incredibly proud of you, and so so glad I had the opportunity to coach and train you–and now to see you SO successful in something you love is just amazing. Congratulations, soak it in! 🙂

Brooke is awesome! She does take everyone and everything into all that she does! And her laugh is contagious! Such a wonderful loving person and friend who happens to take the BEST photos around. Amazing to see where life takes us! Love you BB!
Well I completely appreciate this lady Brooke Brown. This article was so well written and introduced BB to a T. She’s got style (never-mind what she says)…she’s got love to give (that’s for sure)…she’s got photos to capture (that go above and beyond)…and her talent starts with kids! and parents! alike (she gets down and dirty with kids and they love every minute of her…and it shows unbelievably well in her photos)
didn’t know you love parenthood? it’s like the only show i watch!
love anne’s shout out! well deserved! remember that article well…
B. Brown is the B. Best!! Spending time with her is one of my all-time favorite pastimes. And don’t get me started on her wicked photography skills. Great feature. Thanks for sharing more about one of Charlotte’s awesomest* women, CSP!
*Yes- that is a word according to my 7 year old daughter (who also verified the spelling)
BROOKE!!!
I am SO SO proud of you!!! Really, I could not be any prouder. You have worked so hard & you deserve every second of this. I love your heart & I love you! Way to go girl… 🙂
Hope
ps – now get some sleep!!
Brooke is an amazing woman with a big heart and a huge amount of compassion for others!!! Her pictures are awesome.!! Congratulations on your growing business.
Brooke we still need to connect so you can make my family look Smarty!! But I was so excited to see that you have a Wheaton Terrier!! I have a Wheaton too and there just aren’t many families out there with this special breed.
I love my wife. She is the best!
LOVE , love, love Brooke! You are one talented mama! With a heart of gold, a love for your family, a passion for your photography business, and a spirit filled from above, what is there not to love? I can’t wait for you to take pictures of my new little one in September!! Great article!!
Team Brooke!! Love her!
You don’t have to be around her long, before you’ll be smiling too……
Brooke has a personality that draws you in and and lifts your soul. She truly has a compassion for everyone she meets. She is a great girl to hang out with, pray with and be encouraged by. She has been blessed by a fast-growing business, but others or by far more blessed, to know her.
I feel so blessed to know Brooke. She always inspires me as a mom and a friend. Our family had the priviledge to have a photo shoot with her as well. She captures so much through her lens that you can’t put a price on. I will treasure those pictures forever!
I am so proud of you Brooke!
Brooke, the fact that you both laugh more heartily and cry more readily than anyone else I know is what makes you so lovable. I’m sure you carry that capacity for raw emotion into your work – which allows you to capture all you do in the people you interact with. You are a gift to those of us who love you – and gifted by the One who enables you to bless others.
Brooke is an amazing photographer, mother and friend, she’s one in a million!! Her smile and laughter can light up a room! Congratulations Brooke!
Amazing faith, amazing mom, amazing photographer! Brooke, thanks for inspiring me on so many levels but most of all thank you for your tender heart!
I not only love Brooke as a woman and friend, but she is also the best photographer EVER!!! She did family photos for us last fall, and I used one as our Christmas card. Even my husband had 3 guy friends say ours was the best card they got. This is from manly men, who would normally not admit noticing something like this. My daughter had so much fun having the pictures made she asked why I wasn’t as much fun as Ms. Brooke. She is a doll and has a special way of making everything special.
It has been an inspiration watching my dear friend Brooke take a dream and make it a reality. It has been a greater inspiration watching Brooke give her Savior the glory for her success and shared the fruits of her labor with those in need. I have seen her create art with her MAD photography skills and create joy with her very presence. Her passion is obvious, her purpose divinely inspired! Can not wait for our photography session with Brooke!!!!!!
WOW – I think the six degrees of separation comment is an accurate one when reviewing all the responses to this article. I don’t think Brooke realizes how many true friends she really has.
Regarding photography – I can honetly say she is the ONLY person who has taken a picture of me with no make-up on, in the dead of winter AND it is beautiful. So pretty in fact that not only is it Facebook worthy, it is also on my son’s iTouch home-screen. I mean really how many people do you know that are that talented? If you have not contacted Brooke to take pictures of your family, do it soon.
I love to see so many people showing so much love for Brooke! She is insanely gifted and such a wonderful friend, and yet so modest that I don’t think she has any idea how lucky we all consider ourselves to have her in our lives. Smart, resourceful, fun, thoughtful, sincere, caring, warm, and just full of positive energy—these are the qualities that define Brooke for me and make her both a treasured friend and amazing photographer.
My sister is the best. She is talented, kind, fun, funny, and wise. She works hard at everything and loves everyone as best she can. She is a blessing!
Brooke rocks! She was meant to be a photographer and I’m blessed to have her as a friend.
Brooke recently took pictures of my children. She’s so talented! We loved our time with her and are super-excited about how the pictures turned out.
Brooke is completely amazing! She makes you feel comfortable and happy as if you weren’t in a “session”. The pictures come out better than hoped for and I would reccomend her to everyone! She is very gifted and has a special God-given talent! Love her!!
My daughter in law is amazing. I could not ask for a more beautiful person, both inside and out. She is talented with a loving spirit to guide her.
