February is here and the celebration of Black History Month means highlighting and honoring those who have and continue to trailblaze through history with courage and grace. With social justice front-of-mind over the past few years, Black History Month is a reminder of the strength and spirit of hope that is vital for all. “Thriving against all odds” is the theme of Black History Month, a message conveyed through the contributions of Black people throughout years of oppression, the Jim Crow era and the unfair stereotypes upheld and maintained by society.
Black Americans are still carrying out firsts in the year 2021. We have the first Black and first woman vice president, the youngest Black inaugural poet and the first Black pentagon chief just to name a few. Black history is rich experience for everyone. It’s especially a chance for children to learn and enjoy how history serves as a roadmap to their own destinations. The great achievements of all historical figures, known and lesser known, gives the younger generation a vast and vibrant outlook on all the possibilities of life.

Superheroes Are Everywhere by Kamala Harris
The once United States senator, now Madame Vice President, recounts how she looked for superheroes in her everyday life as a child, finding them in her parents, her teachers, and her friends.
The ABCs of Black History by Rio Cortez
This book is a beautiful representation of Black history and culture through its imagery. Letter by letter, The ABCs of Black History celebrates a story that spans continents and centuries, triumph and heartbreak, creativity, and joy.
Young, Gifted and Black by Jamia Wilson
The books’ title is inspired by Nina Simone’s song “To Be Young Gifted and Black.” The 52 colorful illustrations highlight the life of visionary leaders in their pursuit of happiness while also displaying distinct talents and strengths.
Heart and Soul, The Story of America and African Americans by Kadir Nelson
This book takes the reader on a journey through the colonial days and the civil rights movement.
