Continuing on Jen B’s post yesterday, there are lots of amazing children’s programs available for FREE at all public libraries. Here is the link to check out a library near you.
However, I have a confession to make. OK, this is even more embarrassing to admit than Jen B.’s post yesterday. The last time I took my twins to the library, they were in the Books & Babies for Pre-walkers story time. That would be what, a year ago? Good Lord, I am a terrible mother! It’s not for lack of great programs available at the library. But now that I’m typing this, I will put it on my to-do list for the New Year – and I guess we’ll get promoted to the Young & the Restless group (another program) since we’re an entire year older! So let me think back to our experience at the Books & Babies program, which was pretty comical only due to the nature of my family. It’s a cute class, kind of like a mild Gymboree class without the running around. A storyteller reads a few books and plays fun children’s music while your children sit in your lap and listen and sing along. This is a good concept, sweet babies sitting in your lap, but completely unrealistic with multiples, and boys to boot. How do you keep two crawling children in your lap for 30 minutes? Our first problem was the expectation of keeping your children in your lap. This is not a rule, but I felt like it was an expectation for sure. Kind of like how you’re supposed to be really quiet in a library. There was another problem. We scheduled a twins playgroup at the library so we had four sets of twins crawling the walls of this place! Not the best decision looking back on this. Of course, my twins were the only monkeys scaling the windows trying to get out. Somehow, I always have the crazy kids! Seriously though, this story time is super cute and kids love it. Don’t be discouraged by my series of silly decisions! If you can keep your child in your lap and actually sit through a story, then this is the perfect activity for you. You can’t beat a free outing that is truly comparable to a paid class. The people who read to the children are compassionate, animated and patient. Make sure you call ahead to make a reservation because these classes fill up pretty quickly. Jen B. made a good point to keep your library receipt on the fridge. I can’t tell you how many times we have scrambled trying to find all of the children’s books when the library books are due. It may be a good idea to keep your library books separate from your personal books. With four children and maybe 12-15 books checked out at once, it gets a little crazy keeping everything organized.
Libraries aren’t the only places to have free story time. Check out Joseph Beth (at SouthPark Maill) for their free story time on M/W/F at 11:15 am. Borders at Northlake Mall, Morrocroft and Stonecrest also has free story time at 10 am on Wednesdays.
Have you ever been to library story time? Share your stories and happy reading!

We sometimes go to the baby storytime on Fridays at Imaginon. There are always babies moving around (crawling, walking, etc) and the readers don’t seem to mind. Sometimes the reader gets everyone up to do a Hokey-Pokey type dance. Also, sometimes at the end they blow bubbles that the kids chase around. So it’s not just a lap-time event there. I don’t know what it is like at other libraries.FYI, parking is free at Imaginon–you can self-validate your ticket at the front door.
