One of our favorite things to do in Smartyland – especially this time of year – is to highlight li’l Smarties making a big difference in our city AND to inspire others to do the same. Meet Mallory Morgan, a ten-year-old fourth grader at Charlotte Latin School. She recently coordinated and assembled a HUGE (in our opinions) holiday “Basket Brigade” to help some families who are friends of Project 658, a Christian organization that provides services for at-risk families in Charlotte with a key focus on the international and refugee communities. Project 658 provides various types of services to families including tutoring, clothing, English classes, and job assistance and helps them towards sustainability.
Mallory directed the entire initiative. She invited some school friends over to help her make fleece blankets for the baskets. She also wrote a letter to all her neighbors and put them in everyone’s mailbox – never dreaming of the amazing response she’d get. Within a week she had collected supplies, gift cards and cash from the majority of her neighbors. With the donations she was able to create beautiful baskets each with the homemade blanket, gift cards to Harris Teeter and Target, as well as some coloring supplies, puzzles, nail polish, socks, gloves, treats, soaps, shampoo, body wash, toothbrushes and toothpaste.
Mallory and her mom, Kimber, recently delivered the stocked baskets to Project 658 just in time to spread some holiday cheer. Love, love this simple idea that touched so many lives and teaches such an important lesson to our littles.
