Tell us a little about yourself and how you started Charlotte Roofing Specialists.
My name is David Sammons. I met my wife, Laura, at UNC-Chapel Hill and we will have been married for 10 years in October. If any of you ladies have any suggestions on how I can impress her for that anniversary…I’m all ears! We have 3 incredible children- 2 boys who turn 4 and 6 this summer and a baby girl who is 6 months old. After college, I worked for a couple of manufacturers, one of which was Owens Corning, one of the largest roofing manufacturers in the nation. I knew that if I realistically wanted to grow with that company, I would need to move my family to another part of the country. If you have ever had to move your family to a place it doesn’t love, you quickly realize the dramatic impact location has on your family’s overall happiness. I also wasn’t getting the sense of accomplishment I needed as a manufacturer’s rep. Then, I was selling something to a warehouse…now, I get to see the finished product and a smile on a homeowner’s face. Maybe it’s selfish, but that sense of creating something, of contributing something real, something tangible for our community, makes me feel like I’m doing something good with my life. I KNOW, I KNOW, it’s just roofing! But hey, I get to protect people’s homes, their belongings, and their families. That’s pretty cool.
What makes your roofing company different from others?
First of all, our general contractor’s license is specific to roofing. The residential building GC license has maybe six questions about roofing. Our entire test is based on it. Additionally, we are one of the few contractors who hold the highest credential level from multiple manufacturers. We are a GAF Master Elite Contractor and a CertainTeed Select Shingle Master. We are also an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor. Our relationship with Angie’s List has been great as well. We are very proud of earning the Angie’s List Super Service award for the past 3 years.
All of the above items are great, but our business is, at its core, a people business. I typically can tell within five minutes whether I trust someone and I think most folks feel the same way. “Does this person have my best interest in mind? Do I trust this person to stand behind what he or she says?” are just some of the questions I find myself asking. Most roof replacements cost between $7,000-$20,000. That’s a lot of money! There are few other businesses where you are asked to pay that kind of money without feeling like you are dealing with a professional company.
My neighbor said their insurance company paid for their new roof- why does that happen?
Most homeowner insurance policies cover damage to your roof from elements such as hail or wind. Charlotte and surrounding areas have had a fair number of hail and wind storms over the past several years and many of your neighbors may have filed insurance claims for roof damage. The homeowner is responsible for paying their deductible and in most cases, the rest is covered. Be cautious with roofing companies who just come in to town during and after storms looking to replace your roof. When your roof leaks three months later, they are on to the next storm in the next city. You want a company who is based in Charlotte and will be around for many years to come should you have an issue. I suggest calling a professional roofing company to assess if you truly have damage before calling in an insurance claim. Once an insurance adjuster comes out, you officially have a claim whether there is damage or not. If there is no real damage…you would not want a useless/frivolous claim on your insurance history. We are happy to come out and inspect your roof if you feel you may have damage, and give you some honest feedback. We know the insurance claim process well, and may be able to help you decide what the logical next step may be.
What has been the most rewarding and hardest part of owning your own business?
The best part has been meeting so many wonderful and interesting people. It’s really neat to run into customers at the grocery store or church (as long as I’m not dripping sweat from a workout!) There are so many people that I didn’t know when I started my company and would have never met if we didn’t do work for them. Then, fast forward to present and I’m at an engagement party…looking around the room at the other guests thinking: “Replaced their roof, she needed her chimney re-flashed, that guy had a leaking pipe boot, I roofed their new garage, etc.” It’s really pretty funny the way my personal life and work life seem to collide!
The most challenging part of owning my own business is managing my time. As many of your readers fully understand, it is a crazy time in our lives. Add children, family, work, and all of the other commitments we make, and you end up with a mighty full plate!
Fun Stuff…What are some of your favorite things to do around Charlotte with your kids?
Bagels at Poppy’s…doughnuts at Krispy Kreme..Discovery Place…doughnuts at Krispy Kreme…bowling at Park Lanes….doughnuts at Krispy Kreme…I think you get the idea.
We love our sports too and seem to run from one to the other. Basketball, soccer, swim team, and baseball are typical stops on any given Saturday. We even sponsor 2 teams with Myers Park Trinity Little League and I have been coaching my older son’s tee ball team for the past 3 seasons. Watch out for the Orange Crush!
During the summer you can usually find us at the swimming pool or spending time in the beautiful NC mountains trying to stay cool!
And finally, a few words from some of our happy customers…
“David Sammons runs the best roofing company in town. Charlotte Roofing Specialists provides high quality service for a fair price. David is always responsive and helpful. He patiently reviews the issues, cost and other relevant information. He is the only roofer I refer to my clients and everyone always gives him rave reviews! – Callie Kelly Broker/Realtor at Cottingham Chalk Hayes
“ We just had our roof replaced by Charlotte Roofing Specialists & had to share their info because they did an amazing job! And they had a very competitive price compared to the other companies we looked into. The men were so professional & extremely neat! We have yet to find a nail lying around which is great since my kids insist on running around barefoot! They even arranged my flowers & furniture on my deck so that it looked even better than when they got there.” – Jenny Helms
“We received a number of bids to replace our roof and couldn’t be happier that we chose to work with David Sammons and Charlotte Roofing Specialists. David was professional, friendly and very knowledgeable regarding our roof and other work we could do to make the inside of our house cooler (more insulation, better fans, etc). David helped us decide on which architectural shingles to use (color), which was very helpful. The roof looks great and is exactly what we wanted. Plus the crew who installed the roof were professional, courteous, efficient and took great care to protect our property during the installation process. We highly recommend David Sammons/Charlotte Roofing Specialists.” – Angies List customer
