April is finally here and so is your last few months before summer bathing suit season – now is the perfect time to shed some weight and gain self esteem at Flywheel. Zack Hollister is one of my FAVORITE Flywheel instructors who can help you do that. Why? Well, he plays all my favorite types of music – grunge to rap to top 40. I think that his style is different because he has a military background and works really hard to please his “fans” by keeping us guessing what song is going to be played next. Check out a little bit about Zach below.
Zach, you are such an awesome Flywheel instructor, but to take my mind off of the 40 Torque and 60 RPM’s going uphill I think about what your tattoos mean. What is your favorite tattoo that you have and when did you get it.
Thank you so much! My favorite tattoo… hmm… well I have two of them that stay at the top of my list. I have my little man’s handprint on the inside of my right bicep. I got this tattoo shortly after he was born in 2010, right before I was leaving for my second deployment overseas. Leaving home for 10 months after just meeting him was one of the toughest days I can remember so I wanted to have a permanent “piece” of him with me at all times, he is 4 now and thinks its the coolest thing. My other tattoo that stays near and dear to me was actually from my first time under the gun. I was in Vegas (2008-ish), finally among the ranks of the Marines, I deemed it was time to get my label, better known as a “Moto-tat”. I have “USMC” in Old English font down the left side of my stomach. I see it everyday, I know what I went through to earn it. I think about the Marines still serving, and the struggles and adversity they consistently face and overcome. Puts life in perspective on my “bad days”. Above all else, it keeps me strong, keeps me driven and it is my reminder to always lead from the front.
I notice you go through a lot of microphone covers in class. What is the most you have gone through in a class that has ended up in your “graveyard” on the floor?
Microphone screens… yikes. Yeah, I have quite a habit with those guys. I’d say I’ve gone through around 15-20 of them on the one hour+ rides. Hey… I get sweaty ya know…? Gotta keep ’em fresh (usually 1 per song)! Somewhere out there is another Flywheel instructor with the same struggle, I just know it!!
I love that your style of music is a bit more grunge and almost gothic, is that your favorite type of music?
I definitely agree that my music choices are a little on the heavy side! But I wouldn’t have it any other way. I always try to put together a POWERFUL ride, with both the music, and the way we conduct our drills on the bike. I don’t know that grunge is necessarily my favorite but between grunge and hard rock being the first genres I really listened to, it opened up the doors for me to discover some of my favorite bands like Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters etc.
Have you gotten to travel to the other Flywheel studios and experienced anyone else’s classes?
I am sad to say no, I have not been able to make it to one yet. I have every intention of running a triathlon in south Florida this year and I will certainly be making a trip to the Boca/Miami studios while I am there. I am definitely excited to drop in another Flywheel studio and show ’em how we ROCK it in the QC.
What are you top 3 favorite songs on your playlist?
Mmmmmmm…. tough to pick all time fav’s, but recently, these are the top-spot jams:
1. She Wolf- David Guetta feat. Sia (I’ve never seen a rider NOT rock out when that bass drops!!)… Can I get a whoop-whoop?!?!
2.- I’m Only Joking- KONGOS
3.- Housin’ – Rage Against the Machine
