I recently stopped by and spoke with Flywheel’s Steve Justice. Here he opens up about Valentine’s Day and tells us what’s in store at Flywheel in February.
It’s February and we all know that means Valentine’s Day! Tell us, what you do at your house to celebrate? Date night, family night?? Will you eat chocolate?
Ok. Don’t hate me for this answer. We don’t really celebrate Valentines day! I think I should show my wife how much I love and appreciate her every single day…so, I try my best to do that. I am far from perfect at it, but for me, I don’t need a day to celebrate the greatest gift God has ever given me!
When I think about past Valentine’s Days, it’s funny the one I really remember is when my husband and I left a fancy restaurant without ordering because the menu left much to be desired. On the way home, we grabbed take out pizza and couldn’t have been happier. Can you recount your most memorable Valentine’s Day date with your wife?
When we first started dating, we celebrated the day. I remember it so clearly. Linds was so excited about making me a healthy pizza from scratch. She kneaded the dough, and made all of the toppings. I was so excited to eat it! I took the first bite and almost gagged. But, I managed (in my 300 lb days this wasn’t hard) to eat the entire thing. I was still trying to win her over and surely was not going to tell her how awful it was! The next day, she informed me that she had made extra and suggested we have leftovers. I just couldn’t help it. I told her I couldn’t do it!
I hear Flywheel has a Valentine’s Day Date Ride? Tell us about it… What can we expect?
Ummmm….lots of Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble, and Celine Dion. Maybe George Michael! Who knows!!
I think it great Flywheel has these date nights. I used to love working out with my husband, but now we take turns, because of the kiddos. What are your thoughts on working out as a couple? Do you make it a priority? Does Flywheel have a lot of couples working out together?
Lindsey and I are best friends. Like, really. I know you should always be best friends with your spouse, but we are weird. She is a total tomboy and actually likes sports more than I do. We are married largely because we are both athletes (we met through a Christian ministry for athletes, AIA, at Wake Forest). Now, we run a business together that helps people live healthier lives. Unfortunately, because our vocation calls us to train others constantly, we are unable to work out together much. But she will often write my workouts and I will give her suggestions too. When we do get to train together, it is the BEST! We would choose that (and a big meal of course) as a date over any alternatives.
Flywheel has a lot of couples. Same thing though…schedules conflict…but I will often see a husband in the early morning or evening and his wife in the mid-morning after dropping off the kids. We definitely get some couples coming in together (and even their kids with them) on the weekends.
Your Flywheel classes literally FLY by every time. Seriously, how do you make them go by so fast?. It’s awesome….
Look, it’s a cycle class. A lot of people stress out about exercising and it can be daunting to look down the tunnel of a hard workout, especially if they are tired. So I just try to remind my riders to enjoy the ride! It’s a blessing to be able to exercise at all. I just let the jokes come and by the end of it, the ride is over and usually, riders work harder when they don’t worry about how hard they are working! Less stress = better results, with no exceptions!
I know people ALWAYS tell you that they love your music, but we really do. You have the right mix every time. I like it that you include Christian music often in your rides too. It really makes the rides more meaningful for me personally. I get to ride and worship. Amazing! You’ve turned me on to great artists like Shane and Shane and Ben Rector. Any other musicians we shouldn’t miss?
Thank you for that compliment. I can’t hide my greatest love, which is the God of the bible, His Son, and His magnificent Gospel. My three recommendations to get your praise on with (other than the ones you listed) would be Kim Walker Smith, Hillsong, and Jesus Culture.
Lastly, It’s a new year…. Did you make any New Years Resolutions for yourself? For your family? Any advice on how to keep them?
Big surprise, we don’t do resolutions! We try to live by Matthew 6:34 and James 4:14 in our home. Do not be anxious about tomorrow and we are on this earth but a SECOND! My only advice would be to remember that the heart of the matter is a matter of the heart. Behavior modification will never work in the long run. Your heart has to change. So, the best place to start is with the One who made it.
