I have a confession to make. I have lived in Charlotte for 15 years and have never attended a production at the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte (CTC). Each year that goes by I kick myself when I hear my Mommy friends talk about the amazing shows they take their kids to see. How have I missed “Pinkalicious”? How did I miss “Scrooged”? That was it; I decided that I was tired of missing out. So when I looked at the calendar of shows this season, I knew exactly which one I wanted to see.
“Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse” is a book that we often read in our house. I love reading books to my daughter that feature strong female characters and Lilly is just that. She is confident and lovable and knows exactly who she is. She possesses all kinds of great qualities that are fun to teach your little ones. I also love books that teach a lesson too.
Have you read this treasure? Here’s a quick synopsis.
Lilly loves everything about school, especially her cool teacher, Mr. Slinger. But when Lilly brings her purple plastic purse and its treasures to school and can’t wait until sharing time, Mr. Slinger confiscates her prized possessions. Lilly’s fury leads to revenge and then to remorse and she sets out to make amends.
The story is adapted to fit into a one-hour show that is perfect for the recommended age of 5 and above. The story does a great job of bringing Lilly’s life to stage by showcasing her mouse friendships with Chester and Wilson and her home life with her new baby brother, Julius. There are so many fun aspects of the show from the sets, the lights, the costumes and quick and energy filled scenes.
With all that said, Lilly is definitely the star of the show. Katy Shepherd who fills her big mouse shoes plays the part perfectly with just the right amount of enthusiasm that makes you adore her, even when she is acting like one crazy mouse.
My overall review? A 5 out of 5 stars! My 5 year old daughter LOVED the show and was scanning the calendar as she picked out her next date night with me. Not to mention the fact that we came home and immediately had to read the book over and over and laugh at all the funny things she remembered from the show. The Children’s Theater made us a patron for life, and we have Lilly to thank for that.
