Without a strong foundation in math, success in higher levels of learning is difficult. Here in Charlotte, 70% of economically disadvantaged students scored below grade level in 3rd – 8th grade math in 2012/13. Wait – did you read that sentence too quickly? In case you missed it, that number is 70%.
The good news is there are a lot of people working toward a solution. One group making real headway is HEART Tutoring. They take direct aim at the problem by targeting elementary students with one-on-one math tutoring twice a week. And it’s working.
Using CMS-approved assessments, HEART can see that 98% of their students over the past four years improved in two or more conceptual focus areas. Conceptual focus areas are things like counting, the concept of more/less, multiplication and division.
Who are the tutors making this happen? Volunteers, just like you! No need to be a mathematician. You’re probably already comfortable with the concepts covered, and HEART Tutoring provides training and the curriculum.

Weekly Tutors – Volunteers are matched with a student at Billingsville Elementary, Winterfield Elementary, or Montclaire Elementary who is struggling in math and tutor that student once per week throughout the school year.
