I have a friend, who shall remain nameless, that has a linen closet that is so atrocious and unkempt that she quite literally does not know what is in there. At a quick glance there are sheets. Lots of them. All shapes, sizes and patterns. All over the place with no rhyme or reason. My blood pressure is accelerating just typing these words. When it is time to haul the Christmas tree to the curb each year she goes to her linen closet and grabs the first sheet that hits her hand to aid in the hauling of the tree. Stunned, I asked her how did she know that sheet was not part of a set. Her response, “I will just continue to use a new sheet each year until I run out”. This is something my brain cannot process. My brain also cannot process how a fax machine works or the scientific theory of the Big Bang. Look, no one wants to change sheets or wash towels. So, why add to the pain of it by having to endure the agony of a ghastly linen closet?

There are some very easy steps to make your own linen closet a closet door you want to have left open for all of the world to view. A linen closet that calls your name like The Sirens did in Homer’s Odyssey. A linen closet that glows and you swear you can see twinkling stars when you peer into even the deepest parts. One where you hear actual birds chirping. This can happen, and here’s how.

– Sort all of the towels and sheets. No more than 3 sets of sheets per bed. I would say 2 is more than enough, but I am willing to give a little here. Separate towels by set, as well. Towels that have a little shelf life (pun intended) left will be relegated to their own rag pile. Towels you find too disgusting to even look at need to be disposed of as early as of yesterday.

– Bundle sheet sets together. Wrap each set inside of its own pillow case or tie the set with a ribbon.

– Then, tag each set of sheets and towels so that you know where each belongs.

– Now, this is the most critical part, use shelf dividers. This is as essential as breathing. If you do nothing more in your life than breathe and use shelf dividers, you will be fine. Shelf dividers will keep your designated piles from toppling over and will keep your stacks tidy and orderly.

– All of your bulkier, less used items like extra comforters, large blankets or excessive pillows can be stored on the top shelf. Vacuum bag these items to save even more space.

– Last, a bin or two on the floor is the perfect place to store cleaning supplies and paper goods.

There are always extras you can use to maximize space like Container Store’s stacking shelves or undershelf baskets. Bins and baskets are your friends everywhere but especially in this closet. Waste no space in this vast wonderland that is your linen closet.

Organizing your linen closet will only take a few short hours leaving plenty of time to reread The Odyssey. Get ready to hear those Sirens.
