Finding safe sunscreen is no easy task, Smarties. SO many choices out there, and most are not cheap – you don’t want to waste hundreds of dollars just trying them out. Luckily, The Environmental Working Group recently came out with their 2013 list of the safest sunscreens for kids and adults – they also list the best moisturizers, lip balms, and make up with SPF. It’s a super extensive list, so we’ve narrowed it down to just a few that scored a “1” based on their criteria. Also, be sure to check out their Do’s and Don’ts to buying sunscreen while you’re at it!
We’d love to hear from you, too – what’s your favorite sunscreen to use for the kids??

We had a HORRIBLE reaction to Neutrogena Kids. Crazy sunburn and swelling overnight- could hardly see her eyes, she was so puffy! Almost urgent care worthy. Oddly enough, my kiddos (elementary age) now use regular and sports formula sprays like Coppertone. Banana Boat, etc. (haven’t tried Neutrogena regular on them since the kids fiasco) Face sticks seem to be fine as well. We have a strong history of skin cancer, so are very aware of applications and strengths.
The long sleeved swim shirts have been a Godsend, much less sunscreen is needed since they are covered and when they are wet they actually keep them cooler, LandsEnd has really cute ones too that go with little swim skirts and shorts.
I tried Blue Lizard which is chemical free but the problem I found with chemical free sunscreens is that you have to reapply them literally every 30 minutes or you would get burned badly so we had to go back to Neutrogena (bad I know) but we use a lot less sunscreen with the swim shirts so it’s not too bad.
